In my experience, there is a near 100% failure rate of magnetic stripes on tickets issued on FGW using portable machines. I've heard various excuses from poor ticket stock through to alignment of the stock in the machine. When your local station only has one ticket machine and it doesn't work...

Eurostar are quite helpful about this. You can ask them to email the person who deals with BR bookings and they'll call you when they're able to get to it. Saves you hanging around on the phone.
