Hopefully it’s like any other big company these days and basically nobody cares apart from a few knuckle draggers. I currently work for Royal Mail, and I imagine the railways are quite similar in that they’re a very inclusive employer and you get people from all walks of life working together.
Evening all
I was offered a trainee driver role with Northern yesterday for the Sheffield depot. The training course is in Leeds and starts on the 17th Dec, will it be just the initial classroom part there or will I have to travel to Leeds for the whole of my first year or so?
I live in...
Well, I’ve done it! First attempt, passed all my assessments yesterday and got the call from HR today offering me the job. And I start in 3 weeks! 6 weeks from initial interview to start date, that has to be some sort of railway record o_O
I was a bit slower by around 1-2 lines per page on the actual test than the practise sheets, probably because I took it a bit steadier on the day as I didn’t want to go too quickly and mess up.
It doesn’t matter what field you work in now, all that matters is you demonstrate the skills required and you’ll get a chance. I’ve been a postie all my working life, have only applied for one trainee role, got a DMI, passed that and have my assessments/MMI tomorrow.
Whether I pass or fail...
One or two practices a day is plenty, I’ve had around 15 attempts now and am averaging 12-13 lines and 1 omission per 60 lines. It’s the perception test I’m not looking forward to, I’ve done ok on the YouTube vids but I don’t like the feeling of not being able to check my work!
Is anyone else at the assessment day in Manchester on the 20th? Im there but it’s for a Sheffield position, I wondered if they’d have applicants from different locations attending.
Great resource, thanks for posting it up. After half a dozen attempts I’m on a consistent 11 rows with zero omissions/errors. Strangely the more steadily I work the more rows I seem to get!
Got the email from Northern today to say I’ve passed the DMI! :D
I’m chuffed that I’ve gotten this far with my first application for any job since 1997, thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread as the advice and info for the competency questions was excellent.
I believe Northern...
Finally got through the whole thread, some great info so thanks to everyone that has contributed! Had an interview for Trainee driver last week but I’m keen on Signalling too, I’ve seen a vacancy not too far from me that looks perfect (G3 Shirebrook Junction SB) but the application process is a...
I’m a postie, have done it for over 21 years which is almost all my working life. There are certainly a lot worse jobs, but I fancy more of a challenge and something more rewarding, I reckon train driving or signalling would suit me perfectly. It’s the only job I’ve applied for since I started...
Around 50 minutes, it flew by to be honest and the interviewers were great, really relaxed. At first I thought I’d done great, but now I think I blew it on a question where if I’d given a little more information it would have changed the context completely.
Just learn and memorise as much as you can. You can never tell them too much, but you could tell them too little and sound disinterested.
I had an interview with Northern earlier this week and told them the amount of trains they ran, the number of stations they called at and and the number...
