Sorry, I didn't twig that you are in Thailand.
I don't know for sure, but believe you can only buy the Tarjeta Dorada at a station. You need your passport for proof of age. In any case, I since realised that it only gives 25% off FULL fares, not off promos. And there are promos Malaga to...
The fastest way is to catch the AVE from Malaga Maria Zambrano to Barcelona Sants. There are two through services per day.
Change there to the AVE or TGV to Paris. There are now through services available. Finally the Eurostar from Paris to London.
Best to book in advance to get...
The government has said they want a Northern Powerhouse and faster, more reliable trains are one of the keys to this. They introduced the Liverpool to Newcastle service as part of this push.
I think the current need for this extra track is there, to improve reliability of existing services...
I was wondering the same. I passed along there this afternoon and saw a pile of concrete sleepers trackside the Liverpool side of Roby, where the fourth track currently ends and needs connecting. Was hoping this might be the start of them linking it up.
I travelled from Leeds to Manchester Victoria the other day. As a passenger with no knowledge of engineering, it struck me that practically the whole line could be double tracked once you get through the Morley Tunnel and towards Dewsbury. Most of it looks like it was four track. Between...
Could anyone please confirm my opinion that I should be ok to travel between Liverpool and Manchester by Virgin trains with a Freedom of the North West (North West Rover) tomorrow. There are a number of Euston-Manchester services which have been extended to/from Liverpool. They appear in the...
I take your point. Not ideal with so many stops at smaller stations, probably ok at the likes of Warrington, Chester etc.
I remember my small local station used to have about five or six staff when there was one train an hour each way - mind you, it closed in 1963.
Don't know, but rail staff dealt with them for decades up till quite recently. Speaking personally, I wouldn't mind having a job dealing with them - but then I am unemployed at the moment.
Also, whilst there are still people who can't be bothered, but I think more travellers "get it" these...
I travelled on this at 1650 to Newton-le-Willows yesterday, where I waited for a connection to Liverpool.
I noticed at Newton, that when the guard had got all the doors shut and turned off the orange lights over them, he gave the signal to the driver. The driver was standing on the platform...
The Newcastle - Liverpool due out of Leeds at 1344 today (running late) was rammed like a London tube train at peak hours, with passengers squeezed in and staff and transport police stopping more people from boarding. This resulted in a chap passing out between Brighouse and MCV. People were...
As a passenger, I feel very strongly that there are far too many announcements made. Automated ones are the worst.
The one I dislike most intensely is Transpennine Express, where we have to suffer a load of nonsense about reporting anything suspicious, reading the safety notices, etc after...
Silly me - I have completely missed the point and included two stations that are still open on the Far North Line!
So here is one that isn't, Strathpeffer. It is now shops and also the Highland Museum of Childhood.
Dornoch Cathederal was within a mile of Dornoch station - until the Dornoch Light Railway closed in the 1960s. The nearest station now is probably Tain about 8 miles away.
Also on the Far North line, Helmsdale station buildings have been converted by the local community into a holiday rental. You can get a reduced rent if you agree to spend half a day of each week tidying up the station!
And there is also a photographic dark room available to rent (either with...
By coincidence I was at one of these stations today: Forsinard on the Far North Line. As the station is in the middle of a peat bog, the RSPB use the former station building as a visitor centre. And very nice it is too. Unstaffed, but with loads of info about the nature reserve, space for...
Excellent post and very interesting thread.
My personal wish would be for Liverpool to Llandudno stopping at LSP Runcorn Chester and along the coast. What do more knowledgable members think of this ever happening?
As a regular Liverpool Manchester traveller I am very pleased about this change. At last, a reasonably fast train to cover the thirty odd miles between these two lovely cities in thirty two minutes.
The Warrington route is so slow, with trains crawling between Liverpool almost to Hunts...
I managed to get a cup of tea from the trolley on the new TPE 350 from Manchester to Glasgow - there was a catering trolley and TWO hosts. This was on departure from Wigan at about 0740.
The train was practically empty and Carlisle station (where I got off just after 9) was completely...
