Continuing with the Portuguese theme on this forum :-) does anyone have experience with Lisbon's Viva Viagem Card? The English language webpages for Carris, Fertagus etc aren't consistent with the Portuguese pages (and don't ask about Google Translate). However I see via TripAdvisor and guess...
On the description page for the new TS2015 South Wales MainLine release [1] there is reference to the original proposals for the class 175:
"The original specification for the Class 175 included a 125 mph variant and even a one or Bubble car model much like the Class 121. These were never...
This popped up today on WalesOnLine:
"Rail bosses are planning to bring crowd-busting commuter trains into South Wales on future rugby international days but not until the railway has been electrified.
Each of the trains will have 12 coaches, compared with eight in todays Swansea-London...
Mods: please move if you see fit, but I guess this might of general interest
This appeared today on the Finnish railway hobby picture website ( vaunut.org ). Given all the "fuss" over pacers I thought this might be of interest: The Sri Lankan "pacer:

Good to see something nice being written about the railways, this from Wales OnLine:

There's a very nice site called Birmingham's Hidden Spaces. Two of the spaces with photographs and history are New Street Signal Box and Curzon Street Station.

I'll be travelling in April, the dates and times will be fixed soon(ish), but the journey will be
Day1: Heathrow -> Leeds (evening arrival - reasonable free with the train times)
Day2: Leeds -> Brighton (arrival 21h00-22h00)
(Day3: local travel around Brighton - nothing special...
From WalesOnLine:

Might be of interest to many here: The Register (IT magazine) has an article about the New Measurement Train, plus pictures of the insides :-)
This 125mph train is fitted with LASERS. Sadly no sharks, though
Network Rail's New Measurement Train - not new, but still pretty nifty

Just wondering about the driving position in trains...I've noticed it is generally on the left hand side of the cab, though in some, 395, Eurostar, HST (?) the driver sits in a central position.
What is the history/reasoning behind this? Is it just for signal sighting and a left-over from the...
Just noticed on the BBC a report about the Bluebell Railwayextension to East Grindstead:

Congratulations and I wonder what is next? Via Ardingly to Haywards Heath as a remote possibility - not sure how far south from Sheffield Park they...
Hi,
for various reasons which I too don't fully understand I can't even ask this over at UKTS :(
Anyway, the IHH Gatwick Express pack complete with a DVT is my query. I understand that the 73 is electric only (no problem), but is the DVT drivable? Can you run and drive a consist DVT...
Just wondering what are the longest combinations of DMU in common use (and what has been the longest in normal operation).
For example, I've seen 3x 3 car 159, 2x2 car 150, 2x2 car 158 and 142/3/4 commonly but are there services where 3+ 150/142/3/4 or 158s are used?

Hi,
what do people suggest for travelling from Heathrow to Cardiff.
I'm booking tickets for my parents - their plane arrives at 9h00 in the morning and giving them 2 hours before a Heathrow Express train at 11h00 and the train to Cardiff from Paddington around 11h30.
Is this enough time...
Just wondering a few things about west Wales services post-electrification. Firstly the London-West Wales Intercity services, as it now seems that a purely electric train will only be needed for the bulk of services Swansea-London this leaves a few options for west of Swansea:
- full bimode...
Wondering the other day about the question where HSTs have been and a few places come to mind in that I have no idea, specifically the valley lines radiating out from Cardiff?
Has an HST ever made it to Pontypridd or further?
I guess Ebbw Vale hasn't been visited either (either in the...
Does anyone have pictures (modern or historical) and also the current state of the footbridge a few miles south of Trefforest station - which as a kid I used to know as "Devil's Bridge".
Last I heard was that the bridge was closed with no date for reopening.
thanks
