    BR Adexes and Merrymakers

Blackpool illuminations really were a test of endurance. I did those trips from Hitchin a few times in late-70s / early-80s when I was a teenager. Arrival in Blackpool would typically be around 2pm-3pm, but departures were very late. Effectively there’d be a train from Blackpool North every 10...

    Help! Court settlement

Don’t know, you’ll have to call them and ask. It might be better if your mum calls them.

£120+ settlement or taken to court but both 'tapped-in' & bought a ticket. Travelled 1 stop.

It can be retrospectively registered, which shows previous history.

    Help! Court settlement

Not all staff are authorised to issue penalty fares, and for those that can they are under no requirement to issue one first of all. They can issue a Travel Irregularity Report or a form MG11, which are then followed up by the back office to determine the best course of action. Also, they...

    Help! Court settlement

And to answer your question about the deadline, the letter doesn’t appear to give a deadline so we’d normally suggest 21 days. Although I notice the letter was issued 27 days ago - have you tried the link that they’ve put on the letter? If you delay, there’s a chance that the case is already...

WMR Fraud fare evasion email draft help

Ok, there’s every chance that they’ll offer you an out of court settlement - you’ll need to pay fairly quickly if they offer it to you, but it avoids court and a criminal record. The settlement will be for fares avoided plus typically a £150 admin fee. In your draft above, I’d drop the bit...

WMR Fraud fare evasion email draft help

For us to be able to offer good advice we need a bit more information: - Between which stations were you travelling? - Between which stations did you hold a ticket? What type of ticket did you hold? - How did you purchase your ticket? Machine, app etc.? - Where exactly were you stopped? What did...

£120+ settlement or taken to court but both 'tapped-in' & bought a ticket. Travelled 1 stop.

Yes, you could have just tapped out at Waterloo. I’d suggest that 99% of travellers from Vauxhall to Waterloo would just tap in and tap out with contactless or Oyster cards - no need to purchase a ticket from a machine or on an app. The problem you’ve got is that whilst you had a valid ticket...

    MK-Euston short journey

So you bought a Milton Keynes to Bletchley ticket to enable you to get through the barrier at Milton Keynes, then only bought a Bletchley to London ticket when you saw the inspector? That’s how the train company will view it. They will also have looked through your ticket history online to see...

    Prosecution over child ticket

No, you won’t be going to prison. But they’ve checked your ticket history and can see you’ve purchased child tickets before Have a read of post #10 from Hadders above, then draft a response and post it here to get feedback before you send anything back. It may still be possible to settle this...

Fine for expired Railcard on a ~£3 journey

At the time of travel, a single from Bicester Village to Reading (no railcard) was £22.60, so looks as though they’re charging that plus an admin fee of £50. They didn’t issue you a penalty fare, which would have given you certain rights to appeal. Effectively they’re offering you the...

Got caught 1st time and looking for advice

Until yesterday an anytime day single from Stevenage to Finsbury Park was £17.40, so you’re looking at £522 for 30 trips, or £1,044 if it’s 30 return trips. In any settlement they don’t usually offer a discount for railcards or off peak tickets, and ignore any short fare paid. Additionally...

    Availability of Railcard history

Anecdotally from this forum it appears that the official Railcard website sends out reminders if the railcard has been purchased there, but Trainline doesn’t. Not sure about other apps.

LNER trains for Carabao Cup Final (Sunday 16th March 2025)

These services are available to book on the LNER website, and presumably other ticketing sites, as normal. They’re not charter trains for supporters only, they’re open to anybody. At time of writing, advanced singles on the morning trains are £88.40, the returns in the evening are currently...

Electrical issue at Huntingdon - what is it and what's the prognosis?

Down trains seem to be starting to forming a queue at Huntingdon now, so looks like there’s an expectation that Down Fast may be reopening soon.

Electrical issue at Huntingdon - what is it and what's the prognosis?

1A66 is now at Peterborough - one to keep an eye on as it’s a Grand Central class 180. 1E18 has just been turned at Peterborough. Edit: 1A66 has now become 1Z99 - possibly to rescue a train, or to rescue passengers from the two trains at Conington?

Caught with wrong railcard for ticket

If you ignore this they will almost certainly prosecute you through the courts for the single offence on 24th December 2024, for which you will receive a fine and criminal record. It’s harder for them to prosecute for the previous offences as you were not caught in the act on those occasions...

£2.80 Euston to Stratford rail - is that correct?

Don’t think so, but cannot be certain. These fares are set by TfL and they introduced this differential many years ago, to encourage people to move to Oyster / contactless. As contactless is extended in the south east there may be other examples of a differential.

£2.80 Euston to Stratford rail - is that correct?

The £2.80 fare is for contactless / oyster only. Ordinary tickets purchased at the machines or by app are £6.70

Asking about Penalty Notice, I need advice!

There’s plenty of horror stories online, including this forum, but you’re lucky - they’ve issued you a penalty fare notice which is the right thing for this kind of thing. Pay within 21 days and it’s completely dealt with. The horror stories tend to be related to short-faring or use of wrong...
