I Concur with this, I've volunteered for some years at a preserved railway, and the above would be the best course of action, having experienced working on locos, etc. It's more than you'd imagine work-wise & cost-wise. But you do get to "get up close" as if it was yours, by volunteering.

I was on the Celtic run as well, driver was a bit shy with the throttle i reckon too. I remember how the EWS throttle jockey 37 drivers always gave it large!, happy days.

Most trains i go on these days seem to be having a thing for the "Japanese Subway Commuter in a Sardine tin experience." even the Hst's are sardine tin experience too! Whatever happened to the luxury of spacious seats on 13-coach expresses? :(
