    Stagecoach South & South East

Well they updated their Thanet map for the 2024 reductions, though bizarrely it shows the date as 2019. https://tiscon-maps-stagecoachbus.s3.amazonaws.com/ZoneMaps/South East/Thanet Network Map 280822MS copy.pdf Thanks. Might as well run it to Garlinge then, it's not far up the road from...

    Stagecoach South & South East

The 11 has already gone to Regent Coaches so maybe it can be linked in with the 9 somehow? It's good news, though maybe Stagecoach were just "testing the water". They still say the 34 will be curtailed at Westwood, but not from which direction! Not sure if this has been picked up by the...

Reason for converting Par - Fowey to a private haul road

Thanks for posting this. In about 1968 me and a school friend decided we'd walk up the old line and through the tunnel, not realising it was this "private haul road". (ISTR that we'd just broken into the derelict station building at Fowey and found a load of old paperwork scattered around.)...

    Redhill - Tonbridge outage 19 Aug 2026

Exactly! And even the peak service is reduced to 2 diagrams, just with reduced layovers. At Tonbridge the trains serve P1 without impacting other services. It is only at Redhill where the main line tracks have to be crossed to access the bay platform. Of course if it was actually a failure...

    Redhill - Tonbridge outage 19 Aug 2026

Line was effectively closed from 1700 to 2100 yesterday. CIS gave the cause as signal failure, while NRE suggested power supply failure. Certainly the signals visible from Penshurst platforms were out. According to RTT, the 1700 RDH-TON was stuck at Godstone for 163 minutes. My question is...

Road Replacement Rail Service - up Ryde pier (25-28 September)

There was a tram replacement rail service in Prague a few years back, along a goods-only line. The Ryde Pier one looks interesting, thanks!

Brighton & Hove / Metrobus Discussion

I understand through the grapevine that a couple of the single-deck hydros have been returned to Metrobus, with new batteries. Usual caveats apply!

Why is TfL's web site rubbish

That sounds rather condescending to me. This thread, and most of the comments, is about quality of information, not frequency. I can arrange my life around 20bph or 2 buses (or trains) per day but for headways greater than around 10 minutes I want to know times, preferably from a timetable...

    Trivia: Strangest bus stop names.

Er no, it's just at the end of the Station Drive!

Anybody had a train wait for them a minute or more as you ran along the platform/footbridge?

I must admit this is unusual. I use Redhill a lot and, while the platform staff are usually very good, it's such a time-critical junction that dispatch staff are instructed not to hold trains for connections. The Tonbridge line is particularly critical as the trains have to cross all main...

Why is TfL's web site rubbish

For infrequent bus routes I use http://www.londonbusroutes.net/timetables.htm Not official but nice downloadable pdf files and far more user-friendly than the TfL effort.

    Visiting former Yugoslavian Republics

Oh yes, Croatian ferries (and the islands) are wonderful, not expensive for foot passengers, and with so many islands there are plenty to choose from. Split is a good base for these.

    Seaspeed hovercraft

I remember this too: a real pain having to go all the way to Ramsgate, then on a bus to the harbour. Probably a slightly shorter crossing but the inconvenience outweighed this. Is this what killed the service? Did it move from Dover due to the closure of Western Docks station, or vice-versa...

Long or high railway bridges you can walk over

I have walked across the Topolog Viaduct in Romania. At nearly a mile long, it was one of Ceaucescu's (many) follies, intended for a new main line that never opened, despite being around 80% complete, as it was so shoddily built. Quite an experience, as is the 3km tunnel that leads onto it...

Bus services that enter private property (except shopping centres/supermarkets/works only)

It's owned by the MoD and leased to QinetiQ who control access. It's open to the public once a month, pre-booking required. Buses are searched at the entrance barrier. https://www.rochford.gov.uk/foulness-island In former days when the George & Dragon pub was open, you could circumvent this...

    Seaspeed hovercraft

The terminal at Pegwell Bay is still there - no buildings but the apron and car park still rotting away quietly, except when the local bikers arrive. At Dover I remember them just pulling up on the beach - or so it seemed to me as a kid, probably an apron within the harbour area, close to the...

Old signal boxes in southern UK

There's an excellent preserved signal box at Romsey, Hants (near to Southampton and close to Romsey station). Guided tour strongly tecommended. https://romseysignalbox.org.uk/ 1785884882 Don't think there are any mechanical signals at Minster now? There are still semaphores at Deal...
