TFL on NYE - free and plenty travel options. Up here? Nothing! *Rant*

The cost of the “free” travel is not huge. Don’t forget that it is only free from 23.45 to end of service. Everyone attending the NYE celebrations has to pay to get into London. Most would have hit an Oyster cap and have got most of their journey home free anyway. Many on paper tickets will have...

    Could Charing Cross Be Rebuilt?

The bridge is roughly the length of a 12 car set, if the platforms were built directly on the bridge, then an escaltor link down to embankment underground could be built at one end of the new platforms. The old platforms could be redeveloped into new retail units. At the Southbank end of the new...

Flatmate PFd/fined for sitting in declassified First Class

As the upper bound of the penalty fare is twice the price of a single to the next station, how can they calculate the penalty fare when no first class fare exists?

Why we shouldn't electrify more of the UK

Battery trains, with 3rd rail at stations to provide a top-up charge will soon be very feasible. Has anyone explored live running rail electrification? If the running rails were electrified and the wheels acted as the pickup shoes, it would negate many of the challenges of third rail in icy...

    Rebuilding Dartford station

For 3.9 million passengers a year, Dartford already has more platforms and more services than similar stations with that demand.

[trivia] Journeys were you can pick up slower trains that departed before the faster trains

The Sidcup to Charing Cross (fast from New Eltham) overtake the all stopper Cannon Street services that go via Lewisham. Several times I’ve missed tha Cannon Street service, jumped on the CHX service 7 minutes later, and switched back to my intended train at London Bridge.

Destination keeps changing (use of false destinations on information screens)

It does cause confusion however, as the destination on the screens at Cannon Street is usually Crayford, whereas as soon as you get on the train, it is often Slade Green on board. The on board destination doesn’t change until you get to Slade Green, presumably as the driver has to punch a new...

    Is Eurostar a Wasted Opportunity?

That would make sense, if it were not for the fact that there is no such security check on vehicles travelling on the Eurotunnel shuttle. You could do far more damage with a van or a lorry full of explosives than any passenger could carry on to the Eurostar. Passengers on coaches going to France...

    London Bridge reconstruction works

Those passenger information screens were working today, albeit one was faulty and under repair.

If you could create any direct services which currently don’t run which would you choose?

Strood to Rainham via Sidcup, Grove Park and Swanley.

Last call for the Charing Cross to Gillingham via Woolwich semi fasts

We’ve found something we agree on! Even in the peaks, the patronage at St Johns is tiny, 733k per annum in Zone 2 is nothing. 12 min walk to Lewisham, half that to the DLR at Elverson Road, and very frequent bus services nearby to Lewisham or New Cross. No disabled access, awkward access...

    Thameslink Services/Timetable from May 20th 2018

SouthEastern are introducing some tweaks to their timetable tomorrow. An early morning Dartford service is now starting at Gillingham, a Maidstone West service now starting from Tonbridge, an extra stop at Lewisham for one of the evening Hayes services, and 9 additional stops at Eynsford and...

Last call for the Charing Cross to Gillingham via Woolwich semi fasts

Lewisham Council regularly publish plans and dreams about how they are going to transform the place. They have always under delivered. I don’t think Lewisham will ever be a significant destination. My observation of the morning rush is that about 5% of the London bound passengers disembark at...

Do you think Thameslink has failed? And what can be done to fix it

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the Thameslink timetable. If and when GTR start to deliver the service we will find out how good or bad it actually is. Thameslink is essential. Whilst there may not be a huge demand for end to end journeys North to South or vice versa, there is demand...

    Thameslink Services/Timetable from May 20th 2018

All true, and don’t forget that those figures for the Sidcup line are limited by the relatively poor service that was previously offered. With improved services, those numbers are bound to increase.

    Thameslink Services/Timetable from May 20th 2018

Who would pass up the opportunity to relax and enjoy all of the retail opportunities that Dartford station has to offer? People watching at this major transport hub whilst soaking up the ambience? Without Thameslink you would miss this vital opportunity to enrich your life with this experience...

    Thameslink Services/Timetable from May 20th 2018

It’s getting to the point where we would be better off if Thameslink just cancelled all services on the next few Fridays and dedicated the day to their drivers doing route learning. A bit like the teacher training days in schools. Massively inconvenient, but at least people could plan around it.

What is your controversial railway opinion/idea?

They would need to decide in most cases between suicide or misadventure, with the presumption on the latter.

    Simulators for Route Learning

The airline industry has full flight simulators for learning both the controls of a particular aircraft and how to land and take off from various airports. Formula One racing drivers also have access to a simulator to practice each track. Have the rail industry invested in such learning aids...
