From an older thread - #12 on page 1 suggests the Railway has a planning approach for really slow road configurations.

We do have some bikes on board up in the Scottish Borders (see attached) and I agree it is a shame we can't adopt the front of bus racks like King County deploy in Seattle WA across in the States.
Revolution's brochure specification and internal shots look very bus like suggesting a 2nd...
If I recall correctly a frequent use of ECML route for Sleeper service (First Scotrail days) was to cross over to Willesden through Highbury & Islington and reverse into Euston as the planned terminus.
Probably ran parallel to the Sett Valley line out of New Mills but did not make a passenger call at Hayfield (1868-1970) itself - it is the easier road route as highlighted by @AlastairFraser pictures above.
One of the challenges in this area is the terrain and recent upgrade works rail...
Sleeper journey on the ECML less smooth - back in First Scotrail days - than West Coast if I recall correctly. Really made a difference even if you were in (better located) berth 7 or 21.
All my photos looking South are from less than a 200m walk along the road.
Ballast in 'rubble bags' - about 4 or 5 - are South side of track *much* nearer the stabling siding at New Mills Central itself and have been there from before this issue was declared.
Walk-around look-see at lunchtime today suggests that inspections are underway closer to Hague Bar than New Mills and with (ready in waiting) grab bags of ballast at a separate location nearer New Mills Central where the 5mph speed restriction has been starting for many months now.

Ref. Bletcheyite comment about Caledonian Sleeper replacement...
Back in 2005 when First Scotrail operated the route, one Sunday entire Sleeper service was cancelled around 0030 - if I recall, due to an over-eager maintenance track lift at Gretna - and the coaches South took 3h to arrive.

Penmanshiel Tunnel
collapsed during electrification works in the late 70s and - if I recall correctly - required a complete rescheduling of all BR routes across the UK to accommodate the displaced East Coast passenger and freight movements.
It is an eery place when seen by bicycle, road or rail...
It used to be a regular option with an Anytime return Scotland to London. Reserve a seat at the ticket window for the 2pm 3pm 4pm 5pm 6pm Friday departures home on a Friday. Just needed 5 separate visits to multiple ticket windows.
and at 6h30 projected drving time from Scrabster ferry Terminal to Livingston, few peopel would I think consider an overnight train rather than an A9 drive themselves ?
journey times over that long distance are probably reliable if everyone manges to stay on the road throughout
(evidence...
Agreed. The key approach is courtesy to the staff cleaning and the train manager when they arrive. Often the advance coach door arrival is followed by a tactful wait until they have finished and are ready; you may end up seeing the flood of people descend the ramp but at least you were able to...
