Not sure on costs but I sometimes go out or return from Europe before/after a Holiday or Rail Trip by taking a dirt cheap flight to or from Brussels Charleroi. The cost and time of taking Eurostar and then a trip London to/from Chester is many times more than the cheap flights to/from Manchester...
