Hi everyone,
When approaching Leeds station from Doncaster there looks to be the remains of an old railway system where I'm guessing there used to be a factory of some sort. This can be seen on the left hand side as you approach the station and from memory it's close to some fancy looking...
Hi everyone,
Clearly the above never happened (at least to my knowledge) but please try and bear with me! If we could pick any locomotive (separate categories for steam, diesel and electric) to take part in Rainhill style trials which locomotives would come out on top?
If you like we can go...
Really interesting stuff. I would have loved to have been on a brake van special on the Cromford and High Peak Railway. At least one of these specials ran in the last couple of years of the C & HPR's existence.
Hi everyone,
I'm curious to know why from memory (and photographs in books / YouTube) GD based locomotives always seemed to be filthy.
Thanks for reading this.
Brilliant stuff! Enjoying the warm sunshine (and getting out of a stuffy and smelly cabin) would have certainly seen me on the veranda watching the world go by!
Hi everyone,
I'm interested to know whether guards travelling in guards vans ever stood on the verandah whilst their train was in motion.
Thanks for reading this.
Peter Waltons excellent book on the Stainmore route has a picture of 43072 hauling the 7.32am South Shields to Blackpool service on the 3rd August 1957. I'm not able to properly see how many carriages the loco is hauling.
However, another photograph taken on the 17th August of the same year...
I knew that Scarborough had been a busy old place but I didn't realise that it had once had a direct service to Paignton!
For the purposes of this thread I don't consider Newcastle or Liverpool to be the seaside.
I think that HS2 will be built regardless of what the average man / woman in the street thinks of it. In my experience most British people have little or no interest in railways unless they use the network on a regular basis. And in all fairness huge numbers of people don't use it from one year...
Hi everyone,
Hopefully the title is self explanatory. I'm guessing that there can't have been many over the years but in 1962 there was a passenger service that ran from Cleethorpes to Exmouth. Can anyone think of any more?
Thanks for reading this.
