Your suggestions for the reopening of the Northumberland Line via Bedlington

In my humble opinion this is a good idea. I have always felt very strange about the use of DMU's on the local services to Alnmouth/Chathill as they travel all the way from Newcastle under the wires. Surely as most of them seem to go to and from Metro Centre station, then wiring the line to at...

Blackpool North: The most unfriendly station in the country?

Yes there certainly is. I was there one Monday in August a few years ago and the tide was not only in but had flooded the minture railway as was almost washing up to the boating lake. Yes it was the August Bank Holiday.

    Ely North Junction upgrade proposals

Perhaps I should have been a little clearer in what I was saying. I have no objection to a consultation at the start of any planning being done to improve our Rail System. All I was trying to say is as I have been watching and reading about many planned improvements, it seems that after the...

    Ely North Junction upgrade proposals

It sounds like a remake of "Back to the Future". I just wish that all the money wasted with these 'consultations' and 'reviews' were actually used to build something, I am sure that most of what we talk about here would have already been funded and finished by now.

    Market Harborough Station Upgrade

WOW, they are really being extravagant with the canopy provision. I certainly hope that they haven't gone over budget with it!

We need to talk about Castlefield again.

I don't know why people still talk abut this. Although there is space in places for the route to be widened, not for the whole of the length of it. Part of the problem is that there are a number of trains from the Chat Moss Line and the Bolton Line that pass through this corridor hourly. The...

Merseyrail: funding for Headbolt Lane and St James stations

Personally I would put the cost for the widened bridge on to the Roads Department. As it was the roads budget that built that bridge single track in the first place. All road over rail and under rail bridges on open lines should always be built to the full width of the track bed despite how much...

Future of the Blackpool South line

I know the area reasonably well as my Grandparents lived at Lytham over looking the line running into the station at Lytham. To be honest I never really understood the drastic singling of the route all the way. As they are talking about a 3 mile loop from Lytham to St. Annes and as the two...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

I don't know, it just seemed like a long time to me, especially as many of our railways were built much faster in the Victorian period. I know different Health & Safety now. But a lot of work was done to this stretch of line before the TP Electrification was scraped (sorry paused), so why must...

    Ideas for Transpennine route improvements

As an additional thought, why don't they electrify from Victoria to Rochdale. Surely the new bay platform can be used for terminators. Plus it would save blocking up the restricted 4 through platforms at Victoria and be a good start to electrifying the Calder Valley route.

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

Fair enough, I was just asking. Also the comments about Health & Safety are well considered. It seems to me that even with all these considerations that it still seems to be a long time. But as a printer I accept the view and comments of those who are more experienced than me in these matters.

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

I have a simple question. Why is this taking so long (26 months) to complete? It can't be the Covid 19 problem as Network Rail has been getting on with various upgrade all throughout the crisis, so what is it. The sooner we get these things done, then the sooner the electrification can be...

    "Unglamorous" infrastructure improvements- North

Really, they have been doing 3rd rail electrification for over a 100 years. I could have added Ellesmere Port to Helsby on to that list for 3rd rail. It would complete the Merseyrail Network fully.

Trivia - If you had 100 miles of track....?

Skipton to Colne Burscough loops Newcastle to Ashington Okehampton to Bere Alston Leeds to Wetherby Harrogate to Northallerton Chinley to Matlock Honeybourne to Stratford upon Avon Wisbech to March Spalding to Boston Dyce to Fraserburgh & Peterhead I think that uses my 100 miles up, although...

    "Unglamorous" infrastructure improvements- North

I can give you a list. 1. The Burscough Curves: From the Ormskirk line 3rd rail to Burscough Bridge. From Preston to open up a direct route from Preston to Southport for the first time since September 1964. 2. Skipton to Colne line plus redoubling the line from Colne to Rose Grove. 3. A dynamic...

Suggestions for where new flyovers/diveunders should be built to replace 'flat' junctions

To my mind the major area that needs flat junction to be replaced by 'flyovers' is basically the Castlefield Corridor. There are least 4 junctions that need to be changed mainly Castlefiled Junction, Water Street Junction, Ordsall Lane Junction, and the Irwell Street/Deal Street Junctions. I...

    Wigan - Preston Upgrade?

What is described as the Parcels Platform at Preston, were in fact the old platforms 1 & 2, which were used mainly by the Flyde Line services before Preston was wired in 1974, then they were closed to passengers and converted for Parcels. It would not beyond possibility for them to be reopened...

    Werrington grade separation updates

Fair point but when it is all finished, surely it would make sense to electrify both lines. It would certainly would be much cheaper than waiting until they realise it is needed, then spending possibly up to x4 more money to do the work.

    Werrington grade separation updates

Very interesting pictures. I know that only the line towards Stamford was electrified before the work, but surely with a new works done and the lines being moved, why didn't they electrify both the Stamford lines? I am sure that there are some good reasons, but to me it seem to be a basic way of...

    Bolton Trinity Street, latest?

So true. The are that was covered was from the Trough of Bowland in the North down to Warrington in the South. And all places in between. We also had a lot of laughs, I remember the time a worker came into work drunk. He was so drunk, that we placed him in a Parcels Van destination Inverness...
