    Northern franchise awarded to Arriva.

I think the leg room is more important the choice of seats. All of those seats will have gone through some sort of ergonomic testing and design before being produced, whichever wins, they'll be suitable. Some current Northern trains have hardly any leg room, even for someone of modest stature.

The new Northern franchise - what we know

On the map, the Manchester to Sheffield (or vice versa) line has a dotted line to both Victoria and Piccadilly. Does this mean that some services will go into Victoria (they don't at present) or is it just highlighting the line into Manchester in general without be as specific as it should?

Possible Error in GMPTE Map on National Rail Website

Also, New Mills Central, Disley and New Mills Newtown are included in the TFGM area which are not shown on the map despite actually being in Derbyshire (a bit like Hadfield and Glossop) Additionally, the Metrlolink line to the airport is also missing. Seems like an old map just needs replacing...

Manchester Piccadilly to get ticket gates

Wholeheartedly disagree. The G4S inspectors at Piccadilly rarely even bother to look at the ticket - I could flash anything small and orange in their face and they'd let me through. As for station aesthetics, well, Piccadilly is hardly a station of grandeur. It's about as plastic and...

    'ST' Sign

Ah, that makes sense now. I always wondered why Marple station had two stop signs, one for a class 156 and another for a class 142, just beyond the platform for trains terminating and crossing over to return to Manchester. I couldn't work out why they had two signs about 3 metres apart, when...

Northern Unit Refurbishments and depot allocations.

The livery of a train can really help give the impression of great service, indeed this was something a nationalised British Rail was keen on. It's something that Northern haven't been very good at for well over a decade. I know that the livery of a train (or fleet of trains) isn't actually...

Forgive me, for I am thick, does this mean the new trains will be calling at new Mills Central?

    Manchester Piccadilly Runaround

Does anyone know when the last time the run-around loop at Platform 5 was used? I think these days even most specials are 'top n tailed' so the need to use it it is obsolete. If it's been a long time I wonder if its even workable. Is the switched controlled by the signal box, or does it...

    Northern ticketing

So the short answer is that you don't know. I've never understood why people say "what if your phone battery dies" or "what if your phone gets stolen". Well, what happens if I lose my wallet with my ticket in, or the ticket becomes soiled and can't be read by the ticket gate... The...

    Northern ticketing

Season tickets Are there any plans to introduce an e-ticket, or at least something on the iPhone? My ticket is the GM traincard, so not strictly limited to Northern services. Commuting would be so much simpler if we move away from Victorian paper tickets.

    Mid platform signals

Both platforms 13 and 14 at Manchester Piccadilly have mid-platform signalling. I'm not sure if this is a throw-back to when the platforms were reconfigured, but it causes terrible confusion to passengers and obvious frustration to platform staff if the train stops at the wrong end of the...
