A foot in the door? Depot driver? If it's affecting you as much as you say, maybe you should consider one of the many other roles that get advertised more frequently - gateline, etc. That would be a foot in the door.

To be fair, non safety critical staff do get trained in how to assist with an evacuation. So although their function is to assist the conductor with the evacuation process, the public would be wrong not take instruction from a TE etc., thinking they know better themselves. Question, regarding...

Twice over the last couple of months I've seen loco hauled carriages, all in EWS maroon livery, carry passengers between Haymarket and Waverley (eastbound). It's been around 0825 on weekdays. Anyone any idea what this working is? Where it begins and terminates? Just curious. Thanks people.

Ehm, the £30000 you speak of (which not all TOCs pay conductors anyway....) would be inclusive of sick pay and holidays - not over and above, like the wording of your post suggests. And are railway employees not entitled to a pension like other people now? Jeez, I blame myself for rising...

Well, that's not the whole story, is it? Many, in fact most, TOC decisions on staff numbers or conditions have a direct effect on safety - not just staff safety, but passenger safety too. Take the blinkers off, for everyone's sake.

It really would be a step in wrong direction. Gate-line staff can give a lot of good advice about travelling, passenger needs, station facilities, etc. I can just imagine the difference between that and agency staff who are on that particular job on an infrequent basis and don't view...

I used to drive buses in Glasgow and it was common to be driving for 4 or 5 hours without a break. There was only one route where the terminus had a convenience - that was the staff one in Govan underground station and SPT stopped us using that! Luckily, in my current role I can use the train...
