Bearing in mind that the main issues at Piccadilly are:
a) too many trains criss-crossing the throat of the main station
b) the constant need to keep Castlefield corridor traffic moving as any stationary train causes chaos
What about making Picc more of an interchange by introducing some...
Considering the issues of TPE trying various means of preventing commuters using their long-distance services, and that the congestion on Northern services largely starts and ends at Bolton, I'd wondered about the scope of using the bay platform at Bolton for a regular Bolton-Manc shuttle - the...
Resurrecting parts of the old Eccles to Bolton line with some on-street running could:
a) Provide I direct link from Bolton area to employment centres of Salford Quays & possibly Trafford Park.
b) Allow such traffic to avoid the massively congested central Manchester rail network.
c) Allow such...
Definitely DID see one today at Carlisle - it arrived empty northbound at platform 3, stayed for a few minutes then departed southbound empty again.
Incidentally, this didn't go down too well with many of my fellow passengers who'd been ejected from the TPE Edinburgh-Manchester service at...
Not 100% sure, but just seen what appeared to be a 397 leaving Edinburgh Waverly.

Was a wedge-shaped unit in TPE livery leaving from platform 5 as I arrived at platform 12.
They are largely very good but odd ones awful.
What I've seen of good service seems to me to be down to genuine helpfulness from good people, rather than the result of any training or supervision from the company - such has been it's down-to-earth & unscripted nature.
The guards in particular...
Again crayon territory, but with no Oxford Rd. the actually junction could be located east, of Deansgate with existing Deansgate platforms heading to Birchwood only & new ones heading to Salford Cresc only (or vice versa)
Isn't that half the problem with Castlefield Corridor though - that it's a regional rail network trying to fill a gap that should really be filled by Metrolink?
If Oxford Rd didn't exist in the first place, that University/Rusholme corridor would probably have been one of the first candidates...
Got kicked off a Newport-Manchester train once in Cwmbran (had finished work earlier than planned & had chanced getting home early using a later advance ticket).
The adjacent taxi/kebab establishment does a good kebab - if you're ever stuck there for an hour.
Appreciate I'm straying well into crayon territory, but given how hemmed in Oxford Road is by large expensive real-estate, and how relatively unhemmed-in Deansgate station is (not to mention how handy it is as a Metrolink interchange), is there not a case for actually closing Oxford Rd &...
Saw a 3-car 195 pulling out of Chorley this evening at about 17:35, northbound.
Didn't realise we'd be getting 195s on this line (expecting to be getting 331s at some point though).
I work around the country, often travelling via train - one week in London, the next in Falkirk, the next in Grimsby.
I always know my outward journey, so will get an advance ticket, save my employer a few £££.
My return journey will depend on when my work has finished, which is usually out of...
My Local: Chorley
Setting: Situated in town centre, across road from Bus Station. (10/10)
Architecture: Not very pretty, but relatively functional 80s buildings (6/10)
Services: 3tph to Bolton/Manchester (annoyingly for return journeys, not all from same Manchester station), 3tph to...
That'd make sense if the Northern trains were longer, but they're shorter and thanks to Northern procuring mere 3 or 4-coach trains, they will continue to be shorter for a generation.
I do feel sorry for TPE, who are the victims of Northern & DfT's inadequacy.
