My flight attendant wife is going to Chicago for a course next month, and I can tag along too to take advantage of the free hotel room as I get spouse free airline travel. While she's in the classroom, it means I can have a day or two to do some train spotting in the Chicago area.
Is anybody...
A friend is currently on the Berlin to Amsterdam IC. He wants to know why they use two pantographs on the NS when the lead pantograph is more likely to entangle on the wires?
As the loco was hooking up to the consist at Bad Bentheim when he took the photo, maybe it was for low speed operation?
I’m hearing on the Dutch news headlines that four people returning from a techno festival in Spain have been struck and killed by a train at a level crossing among a group of seven people
Do any of our Spanish correspondents know more details? Sorry I don’t have a link. Just heard it on the...
On youtube, there are many videos featuring camcorder footage of British Rail in the 80’s and 90’s.
Can anyone point me to videos featuring loco and classic stock in France, Germany and Italy?
I realise camcorders were a new and possibly expensive fad during those two decades, but there seems...
Thanks to work paying, I had the opportunity to travel on this night train the other week, starting with the THALYS from Rotterdam. I am just curious if anyone knows where the crew change takes place?
I had a fitful night’s sleep due to my concern I might sleep past my stop at Veynes Devoluy...
Just one of those random questions that occurred to me.
Secondmen, or drivers assistants used to be a big thing on British Railways in the seventies and eighties before they were phased out.
Did drivers assistants feature on the railways of mainland Europe back in the day? Are they still...
Just in case anyone is in Amsterdam today 23/06/23, and has the right to work in The Netherlands and can speak Dutch, the NS are holding a rail recruitment event at Centraal station between 10:00 and 14:00.
They are recruiting for all grades on the railway including trainee drivers to join NS...
With regard to the TUI Ski Express which runs every weekend from Amsterdam to the Austrian Alps, I would like to see this train as it makes a stop at Utrecht on its return journey which I presume is on a Sunday. I would like to see the stainless steel P class sleeping cars in the consist at...
Driving home after work late at night, my route takes me alongside the main line from Gouda to Utrecht or Amsterdam. One thing that I've never really noticed until recently is that when a freight train passes me, it never seems to have tail lights.
Can any of our Dutch correspondents tell me...
There are tons of trainee driver and conductor jobs.........
If you can speak Dutch and are legally able to work in the European Union in The Netherlands.
It's funny what a difference there is between the UK and Holland. In the UK, every vacancy is usually over subscribed by a few hundred...
At 15:00 today, an Arriva train driver was found dead in his cab by passengers. They wondered why the train had stopped at a level crossing for so long and went to investigate.
It is suspected he died of natural causes.

I notice that a lot of the freight trains that pass through my local station in the Netherlands (Woerden) have a red liveried DB loco at the head of the consist. Does anyone know if these are DB locos that are based in German depots and run across the border from Germany, or are these DB locos...
I am trying to plan the family holiday in Italy this summer, Covid permitting.
I am intending to drive solo from our home in the Netherlands to Italy while my wife and kids would take the ICE from Utrecht to Munich, changing at Dusseldorf, and then the Nightjet to Rome.
Can anyone tell me if...
Are there any French locomotive experts on here?
I've been watching a few cab ride youtube videos lately because they've been popping up in my feed, featuring the older generation diesel and electric locos that are slowly being phased out or have gone already. I have a couple of questions.

The Connecting Europe express is currently travelling around Europe. I don’t know much about it apart from it is encouraging travel by train, and that the consist is made up of six carriages from SNCF, DB, Obb, Trenitalia and SBB CFF FFS.
Go on youtube and type in the thread title to see...
For the second year running, the family made use of the NightJet as part of our holiday. If you want to read last year's report, here is the link.

We were heading to Italy so decided to make use of the NightJet service from...
It’s nice to see that loco hauled trains are still a thing in Germany, with the impending resumption of services. I quite like the lime green livery too.

The Amsterdam Vienna portion of the Nightjet was on test through Utrecht last Sunday the 9th May 2021.
I don’t think I’m allowed to provide a direct link so just copy and paste:
(SPECIAL) NS international Vectron
into the youtube search engine and the video should come up.
