Though if the 199 can run perfectly fine from the first service leaving Buxton at 04:15, that really begs the question why the railway is closed? (The 03:25 starting from Dove Holes was 20 minutes late off the depot, but didn't lose any more time after that)
This is the big problem with closing in advance for snow. Not an expert on weather modelling but it does seem like in recent years forecasts of severe rain and wind and their positioning have improved, but forecasting snow when the temperature is close to or above freezing still seems very...
A few weeks old now, but a someone has done a freedom of information request for usage of the tram stops in Manchester.
The full data is in the table in the newspaper report, or you can download it as a CSV file by clicking the "Get the data" link at the bottom of the table ( it won't let me...
I think it's fairly clear the Ashton line has not been a huge success. The lack of development along the route (except New Islington, which is in walking distance of the city centre anyway) is one symptom. Whenever station usage figures are published the busiest stops on the Ashton line lag well...
Would running the stoppers from the Grove Park route to Victoria be any less bad? I get why Victoria may not be the first choice of terminus, but if you want a better, simpler, more reliable timetable separating the Victoria route as much as possible is the way to go.
The current 2tph frequency...
I know people will complain about losing direct services, but many passengers in London will be making connections anyway to their preferred central destination. So why not simplify Southeastern as much as possible? Charing Cross/Cannon Street splits seem particularly unnecessary given the...
Looking at Lancashire fares, this looks like generally good news for people making longer journeys, but there are some significant rises for some shorter journeys - 25% for someone currently buying a Burnley weekly ticket, 32% on the Blackburn weekly, 42% on the Blackburn Local day ticket.
It...
How many metros are as complicated as Thameslink though? Not just the number of branches and different stopping patterns, but in terms of linking up so much of the national rail network, importing delays from anywhere between Brighton and Scotland. How reliable is it realistically possible to...
Have LNER ever had different stop positions for shorter trains, or is this just a hangover from the old relatively similar length Mk4/HST fleet that they've never adjusted for the 5 car sets? If LNER drivers haven't had to worry about it before it might be a higher risk to change it now than on...
A lot of the problem is the tubes aren't full like they used to be anymore, so they aren't making the money to subsidise the buses.
Both these consultations are in areas affected by the Overground - the 259/279/349 parallel what is now the Weaver line, and outer end of the 38 has options to...
The latest round of timetable changes are up on TfGM's website.
The 607 (Wigan-Bolton) has the frequency increased from every 20 to 15 minutes. Also improvements to evening services on the 608 and 610.
A third new route for the Bee Network is introduced. The 629 will run 7 times a day...
In the sort of towns being talked about you are probably the only person in the street at 8pm (or 5:30 in some places). At least a sufficiently busy bus station will usually have other people waiting. Not in places where the whole bus station has 1 bus per hour in the evening, but then I...
The government's bus statistics data tables per capita put GM at 55.5 in 2024, a drop of 17%. Which makes a lot more sense with the total journey numbers.
And Lumo can't be slowed down because the other LNER train is right behind them - it looks like the fast LNER train actually has 3 minutes allowance to wait for Lumo to clear the platform at Newcastle.
I can't help thinking they're trying to do too much with the fast Edinburghs, and the...
Doing some digging into this, the train involved in this incident, 2I25, connected at Todmorden with 2L64 Blackburn-Wigan Wallgate. 2L64 left Burnley Manchester Road 5 minutes after 1B38 Blackpool North-York. 1B38 was stopped at Burnley for 12 minutes - was this because of the volume of...
I'm surprised a station at the university campus has never been proposed (AFAIK). It wouldn't really compete well with buses for travel to the city centre, but as a destination and a more convenient station for the hospital, main university site and a large swathe of the city it surely has...
Surely the "cheap" option should just be a reversing siding at Knighton Jn? A station at Narborough Road would itself cost millions and eliminate most of the benefits of reopening the line because almost no one would actually use it for Leicester city centre (or onward connections from Leicester).
I don't know if numbers have improved more recently, but the station usage estimates show as of 2023/24 the Valleys were still a long way off recovering from Covid. TfW will want to get more passengers on the trains before the South Wales Metro scheme is finished.
Separately to this there is the on-off aspiration for direct trains between Oxford and Bristol. If it ever happens that would give a one change option to EWR without needing to extend any of the EWR trains. Personally I think Bristol-MK could be useful, but EWR won't want the performance risk...
