Not that easy to get there though. We've seen what Easyjet are charging :- for airlines not going quite that extreme, on the 31st May (day before the final) Ryanair have seats available only on an extra Liverpool-Madrid flight they've put on (at £400 one way), everything else to mainland Spain...
Leeds-Southport was conceived largely as an operational convenience, to conceal that Northern can't be bothered to pay for the proper number of trains and Victoria doesn't have the capacity for such extravagances as 1tph to Burnley or a service half as good as Metrolink on the Atherton line. It...
They're between a rock and a hard place though. They've committed to addressing the poor frequencies of services in the north and are filling their pockets with billions of pounds of taxpayers money on the promise of these better services. Improvements are continually delayed, local politicians...
If my understanding is correct, there were three bids. Abellio won because theirs was the best - which in this case happened to mean most compliant rather than best value or whatever else it usually comes down to.
I think Stagecoach have been surprised by the recent increase in passengers. The university I don't think has grown that much. Perhaps it's because no new halls have been built, so the increase in students must be entirely accommodated in the city - hence using the bus and, having uniriders, not...
Plus there are now 737 MAXs and A321s with similar capacity to a 757 and capable of crossing the Atlantic - between those and the 787 how many jobs are there that really need a 757 or 767 now?
The rumour (the winter schedules reported to be appearing today still haven't so far) is that the bases are closing in October. Most cancellations today are at bases unaffected by any reports of cuts in the public domain. There is no indication (other than Flybe's general abysmal reliability)...
It will. But in Leeds or Manchester that translates as a couple of extra two or three car trains. That's not going to drastically change anywhere. Partly that's because there simply isn't the demand for new capacity on anywhere near the scale of London, because the regional economy is in the...
I think Go Ahead must be betting on franchising. Queens Road looks perfectly placed for any routes into the city centre. Without it, what have they bought? An incomplete set of radial routes, many with competition from Stagecoach or whatever happens to the other First depots, shorn of the rest...
There's nothing in Galashiels or Colne - a future as a dormitory town is better than any alternative on offer. It will be disastrous for whole regions if the city centres of Birmingham or Manchester follow that route. Even with HS2 only so many people will be able to commute to London. City...
I think Stagecoach getting Queens Road would be bad news for whoever bought the other two - they'd be able to cherry pick all the most profitable routes into Manchester , and any split will leave the new operators in a weaker position to compete than First even if Stagecoach don't get any of it .
The potential takers for individual depots will be different to those who might be interested in the whole thing, whether they'd be more numerous I'm not sure. Chiefly Stagecoach might be allowed a depot, but probably not the whole thing. As already suggested Rotala would probably be more...
This is actually case where local provision doesn't necessarily make sense. Two schools means two sets of buildings to maintain, two lots of administrative staff etc. Small secondary schools (4 form entry is small for secondary) tend to struggle financially, particularly in the current funding...
Remember, if there is ever a need for longer trains in the through platforms - doubtful now 5 cars has been set as the maximum length for TPE, platform 5 has to go. How many trains could you terminate in the middle through platforms while using the others for services to Piccadilly?
Trains will only get longer if there is significant growth in demand. That isn't the way things are currently going. Six and eight car trains are always suggested on these threads, but even with massively subsidised fares the demand isn't there. As for additional services, that ship has sailed -...
