Or maybe a particularly upsetting medical incident occurred and the driver didn’t feel he was in a fit state to take the train forward in a safe manner?
‘Shut up and crack on’ may not be the best course of action.
I have no idea. Maybe length of delay? Severity of the medical incident? Response of emergency services? Running out of hours?
There is a plethora of reasons why they wouldn’t feel comfortable and thus needed relief.
It has been a busy day around Darlington with a trespasser, points failure and a medical issue on 9E13.
The driver of 9E13 then was unwilling to take the train forward from Durham and relief had to be sought.
The new December timetable has a 2321 departure back to Ashington which will be very welcome.
This helps those going to the match, theatre, shows, etc.
Yes, that was the work I was referencing.
Bedlington has the same issues. I have a bit of sympathy as that part of Northumberland was one big coal mine and I’d imagine the earthworks and utilities are complex.
Still, nearly two years overdue is a bit galling.
Not only is it limited, the quality has declined. A large proportion of the catering is now ultra processed rubbish with mountains of plastic wrapping that seems to go in general waste.
Technology has evolved over time, so it should be easier to get fresh cooked food on a train. Alas, I think...
There are some road resurfacing works planned for mid September. With the other stations, they usually give around a couple of weeks notice.
With this in mind, I’d say any opening will be probably be in late September at the earliest.
Power failure at Benton. They were running via Bedlington which required the Morpeth stopper to be moved as it usually occupies that line when going back to Newcastle.
Why? Because local residents complained about the noise of it being in the sidings!
I've seen a few - It is falling concrete from underneath the bridge. There was work with scaffolding and some other bits of concrete were a bit precarious, so further checks needed. Also additional checks on the track and OLE to see if the bits that did fall caused any damage. Looks like the...
It is the road bridge just north of Chester Moor Viaduct.
Combined that with with the overrunning rerailing at Berwick, a points failure at Grantshouses and it is looking at little bit shabby in the North this morning.
Yes, the half hour frequency, free parking and cheaper fares will have shifted some from Morpeth. Even Pegswood, with its handful of trains a day, see people go down the road to Ashington.
Deleval has been the dark horse. Saves you getting stuck in the North Tyneside traffic and you can be in...

If you build it, they will come…
I have no idea. I know LNER were not taking CrossCountry as Guard said it at every station we stopped at on the way down.
My friend is getting the Northern Chathill service to Alnmouth.
I done Morpeth - Doncaster and back today without any issues. No reservations on the LNER coming back but not too busy.
Looks like I was lucky with the winds coming later in the day.
Had a smile to myself when at Newcastle the 1435 CrossCountry to Edinburgh arrival was announced and was...
It seems the financial figures for some TOCs was positive in terms of revenue. Less industrial action, a mild winter and other factors may be a factor.
LNER revenue was over £1 billion in the year up to March 2025 and they paid a dividend of £20 million to the DfT.
Northern passenger revenue...
Can only speak about the refurbished Northern 158.
For semi rural services and short trips they are great.
They ride very well and it is pleasant trundling along looking at the countryside out of their big windows. In fact, I’m disappointed when a 156 turns up as they are really showing their age.
