A small update...
I have heard back from National Rail again, saying...
I have just been onto the National Rail website and can confirm that it no longer shows as Contactless being valid on that route so it looks like someone (maybe GWR) has fixed it.
A little 'Thank you for pointing this...
To be honest, it goes beyond 'not exactly obvious'. The information is quite clear, but also completely wrong.
I've written to National Rail about it. Would be interesting to know how many people have just accepted penalty fares, especially foreigners en route to the airport.

So the ticket inspector was also wrong about the fact that it would have charged 44.00-ish for going 'through London' ? If I had just tapped in at Reading and tapped out at Gatwick, it would only have charged me 22.10 ?
(Edited for a bit of clarity - I was typing on the train earlier)
I'm currently travelling on the 1224 from Reading to Gatwick Airport. In advance, I checked on the National Rail website and it said that it would be 22.10, if I paid via contactless, so I tapped in at Reading.
When the ticket inspector came round, he first told me that I couldn't use...
Usually, the way this works is that 'they' catch you doing something wrong, and then they investigate your travel history and find things that are likely to be 'something wrong' as well. You then get the opportunity to be either taken to court for the thing they caught you doing (and getting a...
Thanks. That's pretty clear.
It was this thread - https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/help-please-accused-of-buying-ticket-on-the-train.284223/ - Where the debate is about exactly when the ticket was bought. I didn't want to disrupt it with my random thoughts.
Just starting a new thread, but it is based on another one, where someone is embroiled in a seconds-critical debate regarding boarding a train without a ticket even though it doesn't seem like it had started moving yet. This brings a few questions to mind....
1) In the past, it used to be a...
I'm not, by any stretch, one of the experts here but, in my opinion, you are overthinking a lot of things, and making a lot of strange assumptions that are just causing you mre trouble.
If it were me, I would write to them just politely saying that you do not understand the list that they have...
As described (though noting your later caveat about 'teenagers') that should be fine. If they've been stopped at 'C', they should be able to see that the ticket was bought before the train left 'B'. The fact that they were on the train to B when they bought it is no more relevant than if they...
So, did my visit on Saturday. A few observations....
A fantastic event. Any worries people had earlier about it being far too busy were completely unfounded. You could have easily fit double the number of people in there and it stil not be overcrowded.
The buses were a really nice touch...
For what its worth, I've got 3 tickets - 1 for me, who lives in Selby, and 2 for my son and his girlfriend, who live in Nuneaton. I've just sent them the tickets e-mail and told them to use Sheets 1 & 2, and I'll use Sheet 3
I know they say about original cardholders etc., but I think that is...
When did your original railcard run out ? If you got it sometime in March and, based on what you say about the validity, it should only have run out sometime in July, so you should only have a few unpaid fares. They might suspect that you have never had a railcard at all.
Usually, they have a combination of things they have caught you doing, and things they heavily suspect you of. The usual approach is then to either offer a settlement for the things that they heavily suspect you of, plus the thing they caught you doing, OR, threaten court action for the thing...
Is your 'defence' that it hadn't been used a few weeks earlier, or that you didn't know it had been used a few weeks earlier ?
If the latter, and unless you have some convincing reasons why you lost track of your outbound / return journey pairs, then I'd be tempted to stop digging and pay up...
