Depot wages vs local cost of living.

Hi all, Sorry if there has been a similar post of this nature before but as there are no hard and fast answers to this, everyone probably has their own views based on personal experience, but I wonder what our esteemed members think the best TOC/depot is with regards to drivers wages & T&C's...

    Northern trainee conductor interview

Hi guys, I've seen a few people have had the interview for Northern trainee conductor interview recently, as I have mine on Thursday I wonder if any successful trainees or current conductors can give me any advice for the interview? Perhaps what questions to look out for, anything in particular...

Rolling stock announcement regarding TPE (updated)

Interesting point on the original press release posted by the OP: Now correct me if i'm wrong, and this may have been old and innacurate information but with the Pacers going, that leaves just the 156's at Heaton and the 158's coming in for the Northern Connect services, obviously both 2-car...

    Additional EMU to DEMU conversions

Fair point, but if if manufacturers books are full up, or there's no money for new stock anyway and yet services/capacity need increasing then it may be a case of needs must. Who's to say that all of the 230's will cover the DMU shortage between now and the newly built CAF stock etc coming into...

    Care to elaborate? haha

    Additional EMU to DEMU conversions

By success, i mean that they've actually fitted a genset to the thing within gauge and got the thing running to reasonable speeds. I think we can all agree it's mechanically viable, whether it's commercially viable is another matter.

    Additional EMU to DEMU conversions

With the provisionally successful conversion of ex-LU D-Stock EMU's to Class 230 DEMU's by Vivarail, it got me thinking if there were any more Classes where this type of conversion would be possible? Perhaps on Classes 315, 365 or 455? I know the 455's have some space underneath the body of...

    Passengers With Good Manners

Yesterday as i alighted the XC from Durham to Newcastle, I gave a rather charming young lady a hand with her heavy bag down to the platform, of which she was very grateful. Had a lovely walk back to work at the university in the sunshine and guess who I see getting dropped off by her friend at...

    HS2 in the press

Interesting article in the Guardian today seemingly suggesting we should re-open Beeching branch lines instead of HS2. Whilst i agree with some of his arguments, its not just about shaving time off for business travellers on HS2, he seems to ignore that capacity will be massively opened up on...

    Career progression

PR is something i've never been interested in but I fell into it without really thinking by accepting a job offer while I was doing my MA in London because of the money, then due to moving back up to the North East my best bet was to temporarily stay in that industry as there was plenty of jobs...

    Career progression

Hi all, After months of perusing and posting on this forum, soaking up as much knowledge on the rail industry as possible, I have been successful in being offered an RPA position with Northern in the North East, starting in July. Unfortunately, the position is part time, but having fallen...

    0pmh to top speed timings

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, but as the doubled-up Class 220 whisked me from Durham to Newcastle this morning I couldnt help but ponder over the '0 to 60mph' times for various classes, like they do with cars, or perhaps more interestingly, 0mph to the maximum speed of each...

    New station at Horden

Was interested to read in NR's Procurement pipeline schedule that the project for Horden station near Peterlee is in GRIP 4-8. There had been some talk in the media that the station would have been open by Spring 2016 with an hourly service in both directions. Was wondering if anyone had any...

East Coast Open Access decisions made: First Group and VTEC win whilst GC lose

Absolutely spot on, totally agree with that. The system is designed to extract as much money at each turn out of the system to line the pockets of corporate shareholders at the expense of the passenger. The argument of 'the railways are successful because of privatisation' often gets trotted...

Car vs Train - Missing Trains Already

I live in Sunderland and my previous job was working in Newcastle city centre so using the Metro was ideal, given there are stops 5-10 mins walk from both my and my girlfriends houses. I now however work in Durham, just outside the city centre, so public transport isnt really coveniant for me...

    New TPE Train Discussion

On this press release, it says "220 brand new carriages will be introduced by 2020, providing an additional 13m seats a year. These state of the art trains, all with capabilities of going 125 mph" That bit about all the new stock being 125mph capable is not going to be true is it, if the LHCS...

    Hitachi Newton Aycliffe

As I understand it, Hitachi's plant at Newton Aycliffe will be involved with the construction of a of 175 sets of Class 800/801/802, 64 units of Class 385. When are these projects due to be completed? and has there been any rumours as to any follow up orders of this or brand new stock? I...
