Having seen the prices of fares on the GCR Steam Railway gala this weekend (£22 - with no short-trip tickets), I was searching around for another Midlands option to take my dad to - and spotted on the MRC web-site a diesel event on the same weekend - any further news of this anyone...
The MRSI is doing what it can it seems to make sure the tour's a success - which I hope it is!
A while back I posted on what to do in NI if the tour is cancelled and sure, for some folk it seems a Sunday in NI without 80s to ride on represents total despair... but things have changed a bit...
I too have had great times on the ELR, SVR, NYMR, GWR, especially their galas - I also have a soft spot for the K&WVR because we used to go there sometimes on family trips in the late 70s, so has double the nostalgia value for me.

"Steam Railway" magazine lists all preserved lines with services operating - worth looking into if you want to be sure that something will be running when you turn up...

There is a PDF tt on the SVR website for the gala weekend, though it's not a wtt with locos listed - also useful is the SVR Online Forum where someone has posted details of the directions that the locos will be facing, useful for any photographers...

This has happened to me before but the other way around, booking flights from NI to GB way in advance - as is needed - even booking time off work and domestic duties, only to then hear that a particular gala or event in GB has been cancelled - it's always a risk.
