You won't get any help out of GWR's Twitter feed after 7pm these days - apparently "due to staff illness", it closes at 7pm every day until the New Year........clearly it's not only train crews they're short of, they can't spare anyone to answer messages either. Perhaps a nice idea for Hopwood...

A lot of fallen trees etc further West and most Westcountry (Devon/Cornwall) branches closed along with many out of Westbury/Chippenham due to storm damage but hey - Sundays on GWR are generally a shambolic lottery anyway due to crew shortage so people set their expectations accordingly! :)

GWR's Twitter/X team now tend to disable the ability to reply to their more significant tweets (such as those which advise not travelling because of their increasingly shambolic weekend service on a weekly basis) which somewhat limits its usefulness as a means of obtaining information.

I must admit I am never quite sure whether Francis is a parody or serious, however I think it would do some members of rail staff no harm to be reminded that they are there to serve the public, not the other way around. It's a huge cultural challenge for the railways generally to understand...

Most likely staff shortages yes. GWR was the usual shambles on Sunday and pretty awful yesterday in that regard. Seems basic workforce management is lacking in respect of school holidays.

Things have returned to normal - but it's a new normal - and the railways, like everyone else, will need to adapt accordingly. Genies are rarely returned to bottles, much as some would like them to be.

Sums it up very well - the plain fact is that for most, the railway is an option rather than a necessity - the odd day here and there can easily be worked around by most, and/or is inconvenient at worst. Only effective option may well be the nuclear one of all out, but that won't happen, so...

The Elizabeth Line - having gone from 2 services an hour and none on Sundays at Taplow under GWR to up to 6 an hour and a 7 day service with TfL has been transformational. Customer service a great deal better too.

I'm not sure about limiting an annual pay rise to those going into offices however there's certainly an argument for those civil servants (and other public sector employees) who get London weighting based on working in London but now work from home should lose it.

Passsenger numbers may be up but revenue is only at 70% of pre COVID levels - that's the number that the Government are looking at, and currently pumping hundreds of millions of £ in to make up the deficit. It's less raw numbers that count - the vast reservoir of commuters buying season...
