    Concerns around face recognition technology may be a factor here. The capabilities are insane, you can be picked out in a crowd photo of 100s or even 1000s. That despite those worried quite likely carrying around a phone with high resolution location services enabled!

    Reading briefly self declared itself a city something like 20 years or so ago. Bus destination displays definitely showed "City Centre" and I'm pretty sure many road signs were changed as well. Went on for about 3 or 4 months and then all of a sudden it all disappeared overnight..!

    A box that size could be mostly batteries, the actual electronics involved are probably tiny and very low power consumption possibly even reporting over the air periodically if not storing the data for later physical collection. Period of capture could be time based so no need to run overnight...

    Related to the above, Elizabeth Line services from Paddington low level are completely dominating the departure board in websites and apps using the open data feeds, often making up 8 or even 9 out of the next 10 departures (several methods of the Darwin web services are limited to 10 results)...
