    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

The economics of commercial aviation is critical to this. Local support in the way used to describe those who might use DSA once a year for a bucket and spade flight is irrelevant in the real world (and especially where every single ‘local’ already has at least two other viable and long...

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

The average NATS salary for ATCs is £97k, to give an idea. They pay experienced ATCs up to £122k, so DSA will struggle to attract at £55-65k.

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

Partly because Doncaster has a Reform dominated council and just up the road North Lincs and Humberside have elected Reform mayors and there are more local elections next year. The constituencies covering Doncaster (and one is Ed Milliband’s) are first order Reform targets so the government...

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

Meanwhile, back on Planet Earth there’s absolutely no incentive at all for that, as previous history and the total lack of interest from airlines in a reopened DSA illustrates…

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

It misses nothing. Catchment areas and populations are how airlines decide where to fly from, not which airports punters would choose to fly from… Confusing the two is the main issue that most supporters of DSA have.

    Bleakest UK Station (Trivia)

In a similar vein Nethertown and Braystones on the cliff above the beach are both spectacularly bleak.

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

The Gainshare funding (as already agreed) comes from central government from general taxation. That’s the support. There won’t be any more. In reality these comments in a speech are pure desperation as Labour know they’re likely to lose Doncaster (and most other currently Labour constituencies...

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

Leeds East is actually much less convenient for most of LBAs catchment population without huge scale fantasy road and rail building schemes.

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

Cumbria and Lancs both extend quite a long way eastwards, some bits of the counties are much closer to LBA in terms of distance (50 odd miles v just shy of 80) and little different in terms of time, and people just prefer the quieter roads and less chance of getting held up on M6 and M60...

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

You're playing fantasy airport again and ignoring real world considerations. The real world as it pertains to airports and airlines wanting to use them doesn't work like this. Being in the middle of nowhere is a huge problem for Leeds East both where it sits, as it has a tiny catchment...

Air India crash at Ahmedabad on flight towards Gatwick - 12/06/2025

Absolutely not, it's terrible for transparency.... You're assuming that the Indian court system isn't influenced by politicians. Any chance of this investigation being entirely independent has just gone out of the window. This isn't said lightly but it's an unfortunate truth that the amount of...

Flight Tracking Services - Interesting Observations

Ex COBRA WARRIOR is ongoing, there's all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff around, including Japanese Kawasaki transport airframes and assorted unusual US visitors.

Political responsibility for railways in devolved nations

Network Rail in devolved nations remains under Westminster control. ScotRail and TfW operated services are wholly controlled by their respective devolved adminstrations, but obviously where those services run to and frequency etc is discussed/negotiated. In that way those services are no...

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

LPL takes in large chunks of north Wales that MAN doesn't.

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

I lived near Kendal for years, we always used LBA as did most people locally.

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

DSA's catchment population is 2.2mn compared to about 8mn for LBA, which neatly encapsulates the difference. As above LBA also serves people from South Cumbria, North and East Lancs and a big chunk of North Yorkshire as well as West Yorks.

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

There's still little (if any) demand not already covered by other airports. Noone is going to be flying scheduled long haul from a re-opened DSA, it would appear to be hard enough to convince airlines to try short haul bucket and spade flights from there again let alone anything else. 1758530526...

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

Much of the funding isn't from South Yorkshire/ Doncaster taxpayers, it's from Gainshare funding, which comes from national general taxation. 1758529337 Leeds East has exactly the same issues as DSA in terms of catchment, it's in the middle of nowhere with nothing at all to the east or north...

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport to reopen?

That’s nice… The problem is that the entire market is already covered in Doncaster and other S Yorks towns/ cities by MAN, EMA and LBA. People from Doncaster are obviously prepared to travel to those airports so from an airline point of view why would you offer something that costs you more and...
