Tyne & Wear Metro: Fleet Refurbishment List

If that did actually happen, could the front unit have cleared the proceeding signals?

    Rail electrification scrapped / 'suspended'?

    You are more than welcome.

    Rail electrification scrapped / 'suspended'?

Given the cost overruns I'm not surprised this has happened. I do think Network ail need to take some of the blame though. As a layman, the Series 1 OHLE looks crude and and clunky, perhaps like with the Class 210 DEMU, evidence that the engineers have had too much control and delivered...

Similarities with 158's and Mk4 Stock

Just like how the MK3 based DMU/EMU have shorter bodies, different bogies and doors. Go figure.

Similarities with 158's and Mk4 Stock

For something to be derived from a predecessor it doesn’t need to share all of its characteristics. Granted they are constructed using different materials, but that doesn’t necessary mean every design aspect of the MK3 had to be tossed away.

Similarities with 158's and Mk4 Stock

I was reading a old issue of a rail mag (can't remember which one) from 1989 and they had a feature about the design of the 158 and they mentioned that the design was derived from the Mk3 coach design. A IEEE publication (N.B. may be limited access) by two Metro-Cammell employees states:

    Opinions On The Class 158

To me the 158 is everything the 156 should have been (particularly having Air Conditioning).

    BREL & Nationalisation

Now that GE bagged Alstom's power business, I don't see how Alstom can survive long term as just a train manufacturer unless they diversify into other areas. If I remember correctly, from the late 1970s, Metro-Cammell mainly did "final assembly", like what modern manufacturers do today, where...

Has any TOC been worse than Govia ThamesLink Railway?

When MTL got the RRNE franchise, didn't they have the smart idea of getting rid of the reaming Class 141s, offering early retirement/voluntary redundancy to drivers and then found themselves with rolling stock and staff shortages afterwards? I also remember someone posting on the old Northern...

    Thanks for clearing that up.

Has any TOC been worse than Govia ThamesLink Railway?

Sorry to go off topic, but were the XC/WC interior refurbishments done by the BR owned shadow franchises before Virgin Trains acquired them? I know that InterCity West Coast repainted the front portion of a Class 43 in a new livery as a trial but I didn't know they touched the interiors.

22 class 185 units being released by TPE - Where could they go?

I know it's been mentioned before, but the 185 might be good for the Tyne valley line, Durham Coast and the Newcastle - Morpeth/Chathill runs. I'd rather see the 442s on these runs though. How about swapping the motor coaches for class 60s, suitably modified with end gangways, a wide offset...

EU Referendum: The result and aftermath...

I've been thinking about the situation with the Eurozone. IMO what they need to secure it's long term future if tighter political and economic integration, obviously something which wouldn’t have included the UK (had we voted to remain), Denmark and possibly Sweden if they vote against the Euro...

EU Referendum: The result and aftermath...

Quite a sad day for me, however my gut feeling was that with the current state of the EU, something was going to have to give. I hope this is a wake up call for them.

Tyne & Wear Metro: Fleet Refurbishment List

Throwing it out there, is it true that 4001/2 aren’t as well built as the production units? It would kind of make sense to me since they were the prototypes, were stored for a good number of years before being modified for service and were excluded from the second refurb.

'South Western Railway' - branding (discussion)

The DfT appear to own the SWT trademark so it might be possible that they could retain the name.

But would they actually use them? I'm not sure I'd bet on it.

    Should We Leave the EU?

The irony there would be that immediate EU membership would be less than certain
