I am fortunate to be close to the West Cost line in Wigan, and not too far from Bolton and frequently see excursion trains pulled by steam locos. However I find it difficult to find out when these trains are actually running.
Previously I have only looked at the excursion's website timetable...
I happened to be alighting a train at Wigan Wallgate at 23:30 on Thursday and noticed a (Virgin?) train passing through North Western, southbound but not stopping.
Out of interest I looked this up on National Rail Enquiries but could find no trains leaving Preston for the south around that...
This was my original theory. Lets face it, if people travelling on routes not involving London had Pendolino's, then they wouldn't be constantly reminded that they were considered less important. However, to do so would not make very good commercial sense.
