I happened to be alighting a train at Wigan Wallgate at 23:30 on Thursday and noticed a (Virgin?) train passing through North Western, southbound but not stopping. Out of interest I looked this up on National Rail Enquiries but could find no trains leaving Preston for the south around that...

One could say the same about steam engines and wooden coaches. They do the job, but aren't the most efficient (but much nicer).
