Wigan North Western

I happened to be alighting a train at Wigan Wallgate at 23:30 on Thursday and noticed a (Virgin?) train passing through North Western, southbound but not stopping.

Out of interest I looked this up on National Rail Enquiries but could find no trains leaving Preston for the south around that time, but not stopping at North Western.

Any timetable experts know what this service might be?

I suspect it was 5H00 2306 Preston to Longsight which is normally dragged by a Class 57 (either via Chorley, Westhoughton or Chat Moss - the latter less so recently because of work putting the OHLE up). Last night I understand that the Pendolino made it's way to Longsight via Crewe (then either Styal or Stockport).

There is an empty coaching stock movement scheduled for 23:38 through North Western, but it seems last night it was running around half an hour late (passed through at 00:10), so I'm not sure that's what you'd have seen.

There's a VT Preston-Crewe ECS, but according to Real Time Trains, it passed Wigan North Western later than booked.

It was 5H00 2306 (retimed to 2314) Preston to Longsight via Crewe and Styal, unit 390157. It was shown passing Wigan North Western at 2327. It was retimed as it was running off it's booked route via Chorley last night.
