That’s bad, in my opinion. I try to protect an ALR against that sort of thing. on the rare occasion when I’ve seen a conductor or whoever go to mark one I speak up and ask them not to as it’s a Rover. I became vigilant on this when many years ago a Scotrail sleeper attendant marked one with a biro.
Indeed, I came across an Avanti guy at Rugby back in May who despite me telling him a couple of times that the ticket wouldn't open the gates, insisted I put it in so he could read the code that would show on the screen
Sounds like an interesting day for you yesterday. Regarding ticket barriers, whether I had the familiar credit card sized ticket with the magnetic strip or the latest paper ones with the QR code, none have ever worked any barrier I’ve encountered anywhere when having an ALR. I find most gateline...
One constraint there is the weekday time restriction on Avanti services from those two stations particularly if you want to head north as well as benefit from the full breakfast they offer.
A trip on GWR from London to at least past Dawlish is worthwhile and, if time permits over the bridge to...
Have you got a rough idea of what you’re going to do each day or are you making it up as you go along? Also, your location says London. Do this mean that you intend just doing day trips there and back to London each day as this will limit how far you can go.
Please forgive me if this has been explained previously. Anyway, I’ve just travelled the full route of the Metro from Wolverhampton to Edgbaston Village. It’s been a few years since my last journey and I’d forgotten how uncomfortable the ride can be on those seats. My query concerns the overhead...
The Express and Star is reporting that Metro services will resume this Thursday between Wolverhampton St George’s and Birmingham Bull St

Progress on extensions to the Midland Metro would test the patience of a saint! Work was certainly taking place outside of Wolverhampton station back in November but I’ve no idea when it was paused. I was at the station last Thursday daytime and although the compound had all its lights on, it...
I‘d been seriously thinking of going off on an All Line Rover next Saturday but now think I ought to make a definite decision on Monday and if going ahead with it, buy the ticket then rather than on the day.
I was on the Euston lounge at lunchtime today for the first time in a year or so and, in my opinion, is a much nicer atmosphere than it used to be. Once admitted, you wait to be seated and then it’s an at seat service with a range of snacks and drinks available. Alcoholic drinks are still...
Very true
Personally, on the very few occasions over the years when I had to sit in K, I really disliked the experience. It felt quite claustrophobic to me plus the noise from the kitchen when the door was open. However, back on topic, I’ve looked at booking 1st class tickets for more than one...
I have been totally put off from using public transport since mask wear was made compulsory. I have seen no evidence that they have any effect in preventing the spread of covid. Personally, I detest wearing a mask and it is also very off putting seeing other people wearing them.
As soon as the...
I usually work in polling stations but now that face coverings have to be worn there, I shall decline if offered a job in the May elections. I can just about cope with wearing one for 10 minutes in the supermarket once or twice a week but there’s no way I could put up with one all day from 07.00...
That goes for me too. I detest wearing one and I find it very disturbing to see others wearing them. I used to use trains a lot for leisure purposes and was happy to spend quite a lot of money in the course of year in so doing. However, until compulsory mask wearing is abolished, I will not use...
