all depends on the plumbing:wink: different intake and exhaust systems will make the same type of engine sound very different. As an aside the engines fitted on the Thames turbo's (165/166's and alot of the 158's used on regional railways) sound very different to the Rolls royce eagle...

CTBC? surely you mean CPBC- combined power brake controller:wink: And yep 185/180's are DMU's with Voith hydraulic transmissions (3speed, convertor-coupling-coupling) and a retarder (although most isolated now). 220/221/222 are all DEMU with the engine driving an alternator in turn...

i've yet to see a hull trains 180 running on all 5 engines in fact to see one running on 4 is a rareity! hull don't maintain em as well as GC

doubt it, GE is going to all unit operations in a few years ;o) MML would be a good bet with the wires extended ;o) but IEP is a long wayoff yet anyway, with the lack of funds the project will still go through but will be delayed so would think about 2018ish!

RAIL magazine is prob your best all rounder has improved alot in recent months and is fortnightly. However another good title is Railways illustrated has alot of general british content, some european and preserved news as well as good articles. Todays Railways UK is also a good UK one...

yeh a group has been formed to help preserve this unit they moved both cars to tebay a month or so ago, its just rust and flakey paint, no fire involved ;o) An NRM special!!!

class 92 would go down as the most overspecced locomotive effectively 2 loco's in one box! eurostar is similaraily specced, 2units coupled together with 3 motor packs in each set!

Thats quite a deadload behind it, all those engines are using dynamic braking against the class70, pretty impressive!
