There are a few down peak trains along the Cotswolds that skip Slough and Reading and run fast Oxford. Similarly there are several that skip Hanborough or Pershore (or both) throughout the day.
Worcester certainly does have a much better service now than 15 or even 10 years ago when a 2 hourly...
I've only known it as finishing/staring at Hereford and previously timed as a Pacer (before RTT had stock allocations).
With 3 hours overnight in Hereford I hope the crew take a book to read!
I think the Saturday morning return working used to be though to Barry Island at one point. A Friday night service I could understand, but is there really much demand past Newport on a Wednesday night for example?
I've been intrigued for a while that there is a 0030 Cardiff - Hereford service 5 nights per week. It arrives in Hereford just before 2am, shunts between platforms and then returns to Cardiff 3 hours later at around 5am. Occasionally it runs into East Usk Yard and reverses and uses Maindee East...
I used to own a house that was built on railway land and there was still a very active line behind it. In the deeds it specifically said that a right of access over my land was retained by BR (Western Region). For access to repair, maintain or make safe the Permanent Way.
Shrub Hill is certainly up hill from the town. Malvern Link is up hill from the Link but down hill from Great Malvern. Great Malvern station is very much down hill from the town.
I believe it's just the distant. Quite a long run from Great Malvern to the Wells for a turn back and adds easily 30 (tight) to 40 minutes to a return journey when a service could be capped and turned at Worcester
Having read the majority of this thread, ignoring the 230's the sensible solution is 3x 150/1's, but is the delay to getting these subleased due to the WMT 196's not entering service. If they are displacing 170's to EMT, then EMT 156's to Northern?
Where will the 150's be maintained? It's a...
CT in the early days ran some lovely magical mystery tours. Great Malvern to Grantham/Lincoln on a 150 anyone?
The Brighton service is no more now. In reality this was several local services knitted together and more often than not ran to time. It does make sense to terminate at Shrub Hill or...
Mention for Worcester Foregate St platform 1. The step down is quite something and the horizontal gap at the Droitwich end is very much a 'Mind the ravine' situation.
Only asking as the 0625 of WOS used to depart from 1B coming ECS off the middle road with the leading near side corner coming very close to the platform, not so bad when it was the 150 diagram but it looked as though she of the platform had been ground off to allow a 170 to clear it.
There's probably some WMT services that do this on P1 also.
Shrub hill can do the same, terminate from Birmingham and depart back again. Same for services from Paddington. There used to be some services that split/combined at WOS too.
Sat at the lights at Henwick LC yesterday I saw this movement go past.

Nothing unusual there, the turnback siding at Henwick is regularly used and was extended for the IET's.
This one however was on the...
Capacity at Shrub Hill plus drivers not signing the station stop? Also they would be forced to use Soho - Galton Jnc and on to the Snow Hill lines as capacity is limited Stoke Works - Droitwich due to the single line.
There was an instance with London Midland just before the 172's were introduced that in a really bad cold snap they were unable to use any 150's as the diesel in their tanks had frozen, mostly affecting units stabled at the rather exposed Worcester depot.
