Going across a level crossing with a long slow vehicle

If there is no notice asking you to phone if you have a a large slow moving vehicle, then don't phone. As a Signalman with a CCTV crossing I certainly wouldn't expect ,nor want, a call even as a courtesy and I suspect neither would any other Signaller who was half decent at the job.Just drive...

More trains in Blackburn to Hellifield route

You speak for yourself!!:D...seriously though where do you reckon we can get the passengers to fill the services, you've seen how patronage drops of on the Dales Rail at this time of year, can you imaging if we run them through winter?.....

More trains in Blackburn to Hellifield route

Well it's the Up and Down Branch line from Hellifield to Clitheroe to Network Rail,it's a diversionary route as far as Virgin are concerned and a route for the slower freight as far as Scottish freight traffic is concerned. It also works local freight to Newbiggin and Clitheroe,so take your...

More trains in Blackburn to Hellifield route

The question is,which 'larger places' are you talking about Bill?.With the exception of Blackburn, and even then it would be of minimum benefit against one change and the far higher speeds of the WCML,there are no populations that large that haven't already got a direct link to Scotland that...

Going across a level crossing with a long slow vehicle

Agreed,if there isn't a sign instructing you to telephone with a large, low or slow moving vehicle then you don't.

    Level Crossing down times

Harri...each crossing is different. Some lower automatically and therefore you wouldn't override it.What I said was, that you can use your judgement and ignore the annunciator for a couple of minutes whilst a crossing clears, but of course the train will then be slowing down at the distant...

More trains in Blackburn to Hellifield route

But through services for who Tim?.A small town like Clitheroe couldn't sustain through services to Glasgow, and Leeds is covered by the East Lancs line. As for Settle, there certainly aren't enough commuters into Manchester to warrant running a service with all the costs incurred.

    Blackpool - Manchester Electrification

Preston is to go into the new ROC in 2017,Fylde,the last I heard, last week ,is to go to either Manchester East or the new ROC if that is built before electrification.

    Level Crossing down times

Yes you can put the barriers on manual, and no it probably wasn't a coincidence the last car had passed before the barriers were lowered again,as I've said,on barriers (CCTV), they are lowered by The Signalman on the activation of an annunciator if they are not auto lower, the guy in this case...

    The end of signal boxes

Bald Rick seems to have a better handle on these type of crossings than I do,but no they will not have CCTV . There is a slight delay between the action of entry and exit barriers. On busy crossings this could cause problems as vehicles and people simply continue to cross whilst the barriers...

More trains in Blackburn to Hellifield route

and you could of added that they are relaying the track as we speak, which they are!,but the fact remains that in order to run extra passenger services you need more units and believe me they are very expensive. Then there is the signalling, depending on where you are running the trains to.Off the...

More trains in Blackburn to Hellifield route

Take it from me Matt, there has been no serious proposals to consider extending passenger services north of Clitheroe. The loadings for the Dalesrail are fairly good, but a regular passenger service simply couldn't be sustained week after week all year round.

RPI's ineffective. What can they do?

Ahhh well there you go you see?,you've just witnessed an obvious crime and Noddy has gotten off scot free ........a phone call to PC Plod methinks...

More trains in Blackburn to Hellifield route

There are no serious proposals to run a service from Blackburn to Hellifield and it won't happen, there simply isn't the demand or the population centres to facilitate such a scheme and that's even if the intermediate stations were reopened.

    The end of signal boxes

The object detection crossings won't be visually checked Rob,it's a system that is apparently already being successfully worked in Germany and has already been trialled here in Bridlington. What I would say however is that if these type of crossings are misused to the extent that some of the...

    Level Crossing down times

There are many different types of level crossing. As has been stated, the automatic ones will be activated by a track circuit which will then operate an auto lower sequence, the manual type are lowered by the signalman when the train activates an annunciator which sounds a buzzer in the...

    Train cancelled Following Overshoot

There is no 'partly correct' about it!,I'm stating the rules as they stand, and no you cannot set back over 400m following a platform overshoot,a Signalman can only give authorisation up to that distance providing he follows the regs to make that move.I don't know how many platforms have a signal...

    Train cancelled Following Overshoot

I cannot comment on this specific incident because I don't know enough about it but generally, in the event of a platform overshoot the following things must be taken into account:-Has a signal been passed at danger?,has TPWS been activated?,has the safety or mechanical equipment (train or...
