Not 100% accurate as it varies from TOC to TOC. Trainee drivers at my TOC receive full pay from 8 weeks after they start their training.

It will give you a greater understanding of the role if you are from outside the industry if nothing else. I paid for it, got to the interview stage with 2 different TOCs at the same time and was offered 2 drivers jobs. Would I have got the job offers anyway? Who knows.

You generally get maps and when you need to sign the route you will be sent out with your maps, for say a week, to learn the route via cab rides. After that you will drive the route and be tested on your route knowledge.

Start the day in the depot, route knowledge tells you where stations, junctions are, etc.

I can't see why they wouldn't recruit trainees, other First Group TOCs do.

With Northern Rail? Not the same position, say a driver at 2 different locations for example. But you can apply for more than one different position within the same company.

My TOC is one of the TOCs that you mentioned and I know of two drivers who had previously worked a rail grinder and a tamper and both had to take the full drivers course from the start.

Depends on the TOC, definitely not with mine.

Working your way up is easy, but you obviously have to have the skills to be able to do the job. Just because you are starting with a position that you are able to perform does not mean 100% that you would be able to drive a train.

Book on, make tea/coffee, watch TV for a few hours, phone control and ask if you are still needed, go home...
