Saddest Sights on the Railways (Trivia)

Ah but then enthusiasts would then rightly call for the renaming of South Eastern to South Eastern & Chatham! Chiltern should, ideally, be called Great Central. Yes I know it takes up some of the former GWR system too.

Saddest Sights on the Railways (Trivia)

Yes One was insane. 1779115799 I agree about Southern. Given there’s a South Eastern and a South Western. Going back to South Centtal would be most intuitive

Can’t seem to download the map, any changes to Southern Metro services?

Saddest Sights on the Railways (Trivia)

Oh come on, if you actually care about this kind of stuff (which I assume we all do here since we’re railway enthusiasts) having two train services named after the former railway names and two points in history, does seem somewhat farcical.

Saddest Sights on the Railways (Trivia)

I think the brutalist stations look almost nice in black and white photographs when new, but soul-destroying in reality. I seriously hate brutalism, whether it’s railway stations or the dreary, hopeless council blocks. I do hope one day we can get rid of these buildings on the railway and...

Saddest Sights on the Railways (Trivia)

I don’t like the LNER livery either. You also have the farce of intercity trains being called LNER and suburban trains being called Great Northern… The GWR livery is okay for a few seconds then it does get dull. Looks good on the Electrostars and the 125s though.

Saddest Sights on the Railways (Trivia)

Yes the stupid branding of the 2000s I'm glad to see the back of. First Great Whatever, National Express bla bla. "One" was an infuriatingly stupid brand too. I think the only recent brand I don't like is SWR and Thameslink, but otherwise its been pretty good.

Saddest Sights on the Railways (Trivia)

What on Earth did they buy all those class 66s for? Same with the class 92s, if I'm correct there are some that were simply never used. 1779057513 The enormous amount of foreign ownership on our railways. Seeing the Royal Train hauled by a diesel of the German State Railways. Network SouthEast...

    Kent classic lines usage

Thats quite interesting. Why is it higher going to LBG? To make room for people coming in from Sevenoaks? Interesting that its virtually the same time either way from Victoria or London Bridge but I'm guessing even longer to get to Charing Cross.

    Kent classic lines usage

Was looking through the excellent Railway Data site and come across a couple of anomalies: According to the site, over 39,000 people travelled by train from Dover to Victoria last year. This seems an awful lot considering it's nigh on 2 hours to Victoria. If people wanted cheaper fares, you...

Hypothetical: 1 line to 1 terminal on the Dartford routes

I have little experience with the ex-SER being more of a Chatham/Brighton person, but having lived in the Brockley area I can say the Hayes Line needs 6tph too. I think most south London routes do. Streatham Hill certainly does and the “Portsmouth” Line.

    Fantasy - a new north-south London crossrail

I agree, whilst I love the map. I think the southern part would be better spent Overground-ing South London, and the northern part put onto Thameslink or even Crossrail 2

GTR Class 377/387 cascade updates 2026

The ex GWR units do look glorious on Southern. I always thought Southern should have done a solid dark green livery on their Electrostars.

    Alternatives to UK Nationalisation

On the other hand though, one could argue that without expenditure on these things the avliable pot of money will get smaller and smaller. We desperately need to make our cities more productive and that means at the very least more trams If not underground metros. Otherwise we’ll simply have an...

    Compassion on Northern Rail

The inverse for me. A decade ago now a woman dropped her scarf at an Underground station, and I ran onto the train she had got on to give it to her. Was treated to a spontaneous trip to Clapham South.

    Weird train-related dreams

Had two very interesting dreams last night: First one dreamt the “Parliament of the North” whatever that is, decided to plan and build HS2 phase 2. In their plan, HS2 reached Manchester from the east, joining up with HS3 to run underneath Manchester towards Liverpool and Preston. It was an...
