You'd be surprised how many people assume a guard is just a glorified ticket seller, ask a few random people on trains what the guard does related to safety and you'll probably get blank looks.

Doesn't the sleeper do a ton of crazy routes due to engineering works, so lots of major stations (New Street, Piccadilly, various ECML stations) will have at some point or another be passed through by it?

I was referring more to the people travelling between places like Peterborough and stations north of York.

If it's slow why bother actually having it go all the way to Edinburgh, when changing at Leeds/York onto HS2 would be quicker.

I'm going to be travelling up to Manchester Piccadily from Oxford on an Off-Peak Return, but it'd be a lot more convenient to return from Stockport. Is it against the rules to "start short", and if it is, would a single from Picc to Stockport be fine even if I don't actually make that journey?

Indeed. If they're not being abusive then you can't do anything. There's no law against being annoying and they've got as much right to be on the train as anybody. And its keeping these small town pubs open (maybe even keeping the case for that lines level of service).
