Wow, I've never heard of either of these proposals. That first idea sounds pretty fantastic.
I too would nominate Manchester Mayfield. Partly because I live in Manchester and am so frequently exposed to it, but partly because it's so blatant - it's literally just sitting there, fully exposed...
This is *exactly* the point I was getting at. I don't mean to stir a debate on the definition of "InterCity" (which has been rather blurred by privatisation) but simply that this route isn't given the attention it deserves because it's in a franchise that tends to give priority to its eponymous...
No idea! I didn't suggest Chiltern on any technical merit; I suggested them purely because of their track record (no pun intended ) for successfully restoring the Moor Street-Marylebone route.
It may be well outside their remit - and maybe that sense of route isolation would only see it...
To be honest matey, I agree with you. I'm really not convinced that XC is the right franchise for this route - it's an InterCity operation, but this particular flow sadly isn't 'glam' enough to get InterCity-level investment.
I reckon a Regional TOC would give this route a fairer shake - I bet...
Ah, now I do agree with the case for Birmingham-Scotland services going bi-mode. It's not the principle of bi-mode that bothers me, it's the execution of it - I'd rather see the full GWML electrified and have proper electric trains, for example.
And here, I'd rather see bi-mode on the routes...
Whoops! You're right - I meant £120 per carriage.
I love the idea to instead spend the money on Pendolinos for Manchester-Scotland, but I can't see it happening anytime this decade. I'd imagine that the DfT is quite content with the cheap fix they've got going now - 'regional' DMUs...
I don't really understanding the reasoning behind this new obsession with bi-mode.
It makes some savings, I know, but is it really that significant. If they're going to splurge £120, can't we please just have more extra carriages instead? I know this plan will apparently grant *some* extra...
 ...As if this topic wasn't already primed to blow. I'm not a mod, and I'm not pretending to be, but can we please not needlessly bring politics into this?
I agree that this story doesn't quite live up to the headline hype, but the impression I got from watching the video report was that...
Make sure to buy yourself one final child ticket before then - something to have as a keepsake in years to come! :)
And yes, Y-P is the same thing as 16-25; 16-25 Railcard is just the newest name for it. The systems are still outdated and I guess ATOC can't be bothered with the costs of...
Because if *loads* of people ask for it, then they might reconsider. However, it's likely that only a certain minority care for it - far below any kind of threshold at which they'd be prepared to bite the bullet.
As much as I'd like to see this happen myself, I can't see it ever happening for...
Exactly - and how shamelessly patronising it is, too, that the great cities of Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Leeds, et al. are repeatedly subjected to hand-me-downs. I mean, the blatancy of it - it's like they live by the old stereotype of the North being grim and outdated.
As I've said...
Whoa matey, lighten up. Sure, BR as a whole ran at a loss. But that was because of Regional Railways, a loss-making operation that wiped away the profits gained from InterCity and NSE. I've always felt the image of BR as some kind of unprofitable carcass, dragging down the taxpayer, was unfair...
Blimey, a third New Mills station!? It sounds absolutely bonkers until you hear the operational logic behind it. But even so...!
If New Mills did ever get that third station, would that make it the place with the highest density of stations relative to its population? I mean, three whole...
Indeed - you raise a very good point. The elderly can be just as inconsiderate as the young.
As a healthy young person myself, I make a habit of offering my seat to those with greater need - but several times the elderly person in question has kindly declined my offers, and rejected my gentle...
Sorry to dredge up the old ticket wallets topic again (I did a few searches but unfortunately the results were swamped with unrelated stuff) but I'd like to know if British Rail ever produced any of their own ticket wallets like the TOCs now do?
I'm not normally the collecting type, but I'd...
I think WestCoast captures the general essence of what I'm about to say.
I think the infrastructure is much more impressive (ie the scope and success of the Manchester Metrolink vs the Midland Metro, the success of Manchester Airport, the ongoing improvements to Manchester's railway network ie...
I type out a whole bleedin' essay of a reply but of course by the time I'd finished I'd been logged out and my post was lost to the login screen. ARRRRGHHHHHHH-!
Long story short, Manchester's population is effectively undercounted as many new and existing suburbs are counted as part of...
I'm sorry to divert this thread further, but as flawed as the EU is, I can't really stand for the myths that surround it - the intellectual laziness is bad enough, but when I see people switch off from democracy (a dangerous thing) because of untruths I think corrections need to be made. Have no...
