Are the recent derailments indicative of poor performance from Network Rail?

Interesting, was it difficult to get the trains back on the rails? I have no idea how you would go about doing it.

New passenger numbers and Crowding figures published

One of the top ten is unlikely to feature next year as it has been lengthened: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/aug/04/a-rail-nightmare-what-its-like-on-englands-busiest-commuter-only-train

How is a commuter only train defined?

It’s just very badly worded, no other explanation.

    December 2026 Timetable Change

It’s good that they are adding more trains. TBH a morning peak service from Clacton should only really be stopping at those stations after Colchester, anything else is doing the job of a different service.

New passenger numbers and Crowding figures published

A mixed bag, some improvements have been made where possible by lengthening trains, often to their maximum lengths. New rolling stock fleets have helped. However some train services are just very popular and cannot be lengthened any further and the tracks cannot accommodate any more trains (SWR...

New passenger numbers and Crowding figures published

Just out of interest was it Thameslink on the Midland Main Line, ECML or south of the river? Wondering if the Thameslink project actually solved the overcrowding issues or created new ones!

The figures for Reading presumably include passengers passing through the station on trains that stop there? It’s not flows through the gate lines.

They used to say how many coaches the service was formed of, do they not do that anymore?

SWR timetable refresh - consultation in Autumn 2026

So the extent of the redoubling previously undertaken probably wasn’t enough to maintain performance.

    GBR Anglia

So is GBR Anglia is effectively a region? If so what are the others called? Are they intending to match the existing Network Rail regions?

    GTR Summer Holiday Cancellations

I would love to see the cost benefit analysis of these temporary cuts.

    Tyne & Wear Metro frequencies

What’s the highest frequency of train service that has historically been scheduled through the core?

    December 2026 Timetable Change

Reinstating the service to what it was prior to COVID-19 and any passengers using it will be paying a premium fare, so revenue will go up which is what they are desperate for.

Skegness by EMR this Summer, 2 car 158s today, must be cozy

Government says it wants to promote economic growth, then cuts trains services and suppresses passenger demand. Go figure.

Are these train loading statistics publicly available?

SWR timetable refresh - consultation in Autumn 2026

I have often thought that a 4tph 5 car Shepperton to Kingston shuttle, plus 4tph on the Kingston Loop and 4tph on the Hounslow line would represent the best use of limited resources to benefit as many passengers as possible. Passengers from the Shepperton branch would have to change for...

SWR timetable refresh - consultation in Autumn 2026

Would be easier if Basingstoke to Reading West junction was electrified, but whether you choose overhead or third rail you end up with a changeover point between the two systems at one end or the other. Some types of dual voltage rolling stock needs to come to a complete halt on the line to do...

SWR timetable refresh - consultation in Autumn 2026

It’s a service that I have often thought should be provided but you would need sufficient DMUs to operate it and they are in short supply for existing services.

SWR timetable refresh - consultation in Autumn 2026

Totally agree - see also the current two 2tph to Epsom. Richmond to Kingston should be 4tph. A Metro concept for South West London is urgently required.
