UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

I'm not sure it's as simple as that. Certainly in the early days Tesla supercharging was subsidised as a way to sell cars - eg free supercharging for life. My understanding is that discharging is cheaper now because Tesla builds their own charging requirement, so it's all vertically integrated...

Pros and cons of Continuous Welded Rail (CWR)

Perhaps, but we were talking about buckling in hot weather. If the rail is stressed to the same value it makes no odds. Indeed. I was exceedingly poor at calculating it even for simple sections.

Pros and cons of Continuous Welded Rail (CWR)

    Stress is exactly the same

Pros and cons of Continuous Welded Rail (CWR)

The longitudinal expansion and strain will be the same as a thinner section rail for a given temperature difference. The thicker section means the rail can withstand higher forces.

Are there any other options for DMUs for TfW and other operators other than CAF?

Don't forget the 755s had fuel capacity deliberately reduced in order to be able to use sprinter speed limits (axle loading). I'm not sure how much of an issue that is in Wales, a lot of the routes seem fairly low speed anyway.

 Tesla is actually a public stock company, but whatever. Tesla publish the complete workshop manuals for every maintenance task on their website, free of charge. You can buy all the parts. So perfect for a proud DIYer. Well reduction gearboxes in industrial service might have an oil...

Correct. The whole vehicle warranty is 50,000 miles or 5 years, and the battery and drivetrain 120,000 miles or 8 years. My car hadn't been seen by Tesla since the day the original owner drove it away brand new. Like I say, I didn't have to even say the word warranty - just approved the work in...

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

To be honest I wouldn't bother getting an electric car serviced at all. The Tesla model of test the brake fluid once a year and fix stuff when it breaks is all that's needed. Engines need a lot of servicing to keep working reliably. Batteries and motors do not.

That's the other thing the incumbents are getting wrong. We have to have the Kia "serviced" to maintain the warranty. A wasted day and £250 for them to provide a report saying the tyre pressures and treads were ok (which we already knew) and 95% of the rest of it was a load of blank tick boxes...

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

It has not been far off. Very nearly 25% last year were BEV and the 33% target for this year is not going to be missed by much. 100% Yup. And it's going to bite them in the bum. They really are sticking their heads in the sand. I think we will be close to 100% in 2035 anyway, provided the...

Reason for converting Par - Fowey to a private haul road

Indeed. You don't have to go far from the tourist spots to see some very deprived areas. Oh and for anyone holidaying there I cannot recommend highly enough a visit to PK Porthcurno. My wife and kids really didn't want to go but ended up raving about it. It's a really fantastic museum. Anyway...

Reason for converting Par - Fowey to a private haul road

There are only 2 routes into Fowey: From that roundabout halfway to Par. Over the Boddinick ferry. As for Mehavissey, we took the ferry there last year and enjoyed the trip and seeing dolphins. We all agreed the only downside was that we ended up in Mehavissey  .

Reason for converting Par - Fowey to a private haul road

Actually that wouldn't be a very good use of it. It would dump you at the old railway station area, and there's only a small car park there. You'd then have to drive all the way out of town up the the roundabout and turn left to get to the main car park. By that time you've driven halfway back...

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

Stupid idea. The industry is transitioning to electric. Pandering to pressure from legacy manufacturers to keep building polluting old tech is not going to help them in the long run. Nobody who tried an EV ever goes back. Mandate or not, ICE has limited time left.

Class 810 East Midlands Railway catering offer

£135 return earlier this week Kettering to St P. Noisy air conditioning, awful seats on the outward. 2 trains in a row cancelled on the return. Everyone crammed onto a 5 car 222 which apparently the rear coaches were going to be detached at Kettering so was obviously 5 vice 10. The Sheffield...

Reason for converting Par - Fowey to a private haul road

Some idle pondering leads me to wonder what the rationale for closing the Par to Fowey line was. It was converted (and still operates as) a private haul road from the clay driers at Par to the export terminal at Fowey. Seems a bizarre move given everything else remained on rail. All the...

So, some realities of EV ownership. Tesla model 3 bought used 2 year old 27,000 miles in May 2023. Has just passed 110,000 miles. I have bought 6 tyres. Total maintenance spend other than tyres and windscreen washer fluid £240: Front suspension control arms £120 Air conditioning filters change...

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

I'm not sure that fully explains it. Stuff might be more crammed in, but it's the same amount of heat that needs shifting. The actual heat load is the same. I think it's just a cheap and nasty HVAC system.

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

Just arriving at St P now having got on at Kettering and that's quite long enough for me. It's painful to listen to constantly. How can Stadtler, Siemens and Bombardier manage to make whisper quiet ventilation? I'm guessing it's all cheap tat on the IEP.
