    Trivia: Bizarre services

I had occasion to change trains at Crewe today, not a station I've visited before. Whilst I was hanging around, I noticed there was an EMR service to Newark Castle via Stoke. The seemed to run semi-fast to Nottingham, then calling all shacks to Newark. Sort of long distance morphing into local...

Victoria Line southbound Oxford Circus to Green Park speed limit

Hmmm. Not sure I believe it's as simple as "a broken sleeper". If it was a single broken sleeper, why is almost the entire section from Oxford Circus to Green Park subject to the limit? Also, when you are travelling over the lit section with the speed restriction, there's a very obvious change...

ASLEF Overtime Ban at TPE Suspended

What exactly has the Mayor of West Yorkshire (the term itself is almost comical) got to do with running TPE or resolving the dispute? Or is it just a Labour wannabe politician trying to make a case for nationalisation of te industry?

    Pumpkin Sheffield closed

There's one at Liverpool Street but every time I've been in the shelves have been almost empty with just afew very expensive sad offerings on display, so I've never actually bought anything there other than a bottle of water. I do quite like Upper Crust, but I've stopped buying them as they are...

    Edinburgh Tram developments

Couldn't they interleave the tracks at these locations, to reduce the width required? Nottingham tram does this on part of the street running.

Victoria Line southbound Oxford Circus to Green Park speed limit

Clearly there is some issue or work taking place in this section as there are lights on in the tunnel and trains run slowly for almost the entire section. Just curious as to what the issue is?

Worst Railway Journeys in the UK

Nope, absolute worst on the tube is Victoria line southbound and being told by the auto announcer that "there is no step-free access at Brixton" before and during every single stop. Does my head in!

    Railways running mid-week next week

Confirmed steam hauled form today. Rest of the line still diesel. Why they didn't leave this section as steam hauled all week is nonsensical - it's still dry so there's been no reduction in fire risk. Unfortunately tomorrow is our last day and the kids have decreed beach if it's sunny. We'd have...

    State of GWR’s IETs

Years ago a friend was on an ECML express and experienced similar. Went and found the guard who also looked concerned. Stopped the train at the next station and found a "not to go" placard...

    Lancaster Gate Station

I really don't know why it's open on Sundays. No one gets on, no one gets off. Couldn't they close it Sundays to help alleviate some of the current staffing issues?

    Lancaster Gate Station

Mile End tends to have a lot of interchange between central and district, so perhaps not that many entry/exits. Though there is a rather good pub a short walk away, so the entry exits have been going up by a few week for the past couple of months

    Railways running mid-week next week

Just seems bizarre decision to have no steam over the school half term. It must be disappointing/putting off loads of punters. And there's going to be more and more warm dry weather until autumn.

    Lancaster Gate Station

Chancery Lane always seems very quiet.

    Railways running mid-week next week

No steam on the NYMR due to lineside fire on 25th May. Currently staying in Whitby for a week and was looking forward to a trip but damned if I'm paying the fares they charge (there 7 of us, so it's not a cheap day out) if there's no kettle on the front. Website says no more steam "until there...

    State of GWR’s IETs

The irony is that other than the very few dining trains the full kitchens go completely unused.

Are there any British settlements that have completely depopulated in modern history?

There was a news report on the BBC website about some part of Glasgow that has 3 people living in an estate of several hundred houses and flats.

Sleeper trains: Individual sleeping pods or sharing a cabin with a stranger. Which is more preferable?

But if I tick a box to say I'm fully aware of those (IMV negligible but non-zero) risks, what's the issue?

Sleeper trains: Individual sleeping pods or sharing a cabin with a stranger. Which is more preferable?

I don't understand what there "issues" are? It worked fine for decades and still works fine on the continent. I think the issues are largely in the imagination of the management.

Serco are being booted soon though aren't they. GWR seem to manage it without issue on the Night Riviera (or at least were when I last used it).
