They really need to introduce mandatory seat reservations and ban standing tickets on regional and long distance trains! No seat reservation = No travel!
Cancellation? Rebooked on next available train with spare seats. Simple.
Disruption? Direct you to rail replacement buses at front of...
Given my experience on the railways of late Monday and Friday is actually quiet compared to mid week or even weekends. Hybrid WFH seems to be permanent in Australia. It is especially strong in Victoria where office occupancy is under 50% the lowest in Australia.
You should definitely do more long distance train travel in Queensland. The spirit of Queensland to Cairns and The Spirit of the Outback to Longreach are excellent and very worth doing. However they are both over 24hour long overnight trains.
In terms of passenger comfort and friendly staff...
It wouldn't necessarily reduce the amount of track maintenance just when it occurs. Although its not uncommon in Australia to use temporary speed restrictions to delay trackwork to a less busy time. The dreaded 40kph TSR is annoying especially when there is miles of it. However I much rather be...
Adelaide to Cook on the Indian Pacific train at 1141km with no intermediate stop. But given Cook is only a stopover station not an open access station where you can end a journey.
Thus making Adelaide to Perth at 2700km the longest distance between stations where you can get on or off the train.
Something does need to change regarding major hoilday weekend trackwork. Something that was unheard-of 10 years was major weekday trackwork. However in Australia this is often undertaken even affecting the weekday peak times.
Perhaps there needs to be a total ban on planned trackwork network...
Australia is Mask Free on Aircraft and in Airports nationally. It is also Mask free on public transport nationally too. Some states eg Queensland you don't even need to use a mask in a doctors clinic.
Illegally there was a guy in Queensland who rode an E bike that had been modified at 110kph down a highway. He was brave to do that as one rock on the road and he would have been flying.
Normal legal E bikes max out at about 40kph.
Travelling Alone is great especially if you have done your research and prepared well with transport and accommodation booked before leaving.
With long distance trains never cut connections any finer than 2 hours incase of delays. If the train connection is less than daily consider at least 4...
Thats true being from Australia its extremely hard to understand how the distances are so much shorter especially in Europe. A 4 hour train trip is short distance train eg Brisbane to Bundaberg. its the kind of trip one would do for a day trip. However there are only 2 services a day on this...
There is zero chance of me standing on a long distance train for 4 hours let alone 8. 8 hours by bus really isn't that bad unless overnight! Compulsory reservations means the train company knows exactly how many people need to be moved to other services and if buses are required at all. without...
Definitely pull over every now and then if there are safe stable hard shoulders to stop on. If its been excessively wet weather the edge of the highway can be very soft and can tip a truck over if unlucky.
If your on a highway that has overtaking lanes every 10 to 20km then keep on driving and...
Make it reservation required on all services and a total ban on any standing passengers even during disruptions. I certainly would like to know exactly what seat I will be sitting in at the time of booking and will be extremely pissed off if I found such long distance trains full of standing...
Some regional long distance trains in Australia have Defibrillators, Industrial grade first aid kits on board as well as satellite phones for any dire emergency on board.
First class seems equivalent of business class on Queensland Rail tilt trains. Given that business class seats are the only ones that give me enough space to sit comfortably without annoying the person next to me. I will have to go first class.
As for the regional trains thing. I assume all...
I am assuming a train similar to the Rockhampton Tilt Train in Queensland. Rather than premium overnight long distance train. Glasgow seems to be under 6 hours ex London. That makes it similar to Brisbane to Gladstone or about 550km.
is the Glasgow train a premium service?
Make sure you travel to Western NSW as its very different to Sydney and alot of coastal areas. Some people say the inland of Australia is the real Australia! I also recommend Western Queensland where I spend a lot of my time its so different to the cities.
Train travel in Australia is far...
Thats a very long shut down! Will there be road coaches provided for Amsterdam passengers? I certainly would hope so. Where will the train terminate in the interim?
I was trying to search for some 1st class train tickets for London to Glasgow and return in late November. The cheapest I could find was 263 pounds or AUD$475. with Avanti West Coast. This is an extremely high price for what I assume is day train only.
To put this in perspective I could...
