Oh boy. I've just realised that my other half's friend spells things the way she pronounces them. There can be no other explanation for her sending a message that includes the phrase "stick that was full of sharp forns".

I think the argument against ties would be that they can dangle, and end up dipping in all sorts of fluids and whatnot (I'm sure I can't be the only one here who's ever had to clean their tie after an encounter with some soup?), whereas that's not a risk with bow tie.
