Which railway lines are the least used in this country?

That reminds me - was on the early morning train out of Mallaig the other Saturday, heading back south. Two people, including myself, boarded at Lochailort bringing the total number of passengers on board up to ...... three! There was no change until we reached Corpach. From Fort William...

Which railway lines are the least used in this country?

In the summer, daytime (Scotrail) trains on the Mallaig extension are often standing room only. The early morning and late night trains a different matter, especially in winter.

‘Cyclists who kill could face life sentence’

As an aside, I was quite bemused the other day: was walking along the pavement when an adult male came cycling furiously towards me. So I stepped off the pavement (into an empty parking space) to allow him to pass, and as he did so, he very politely and appreciatively said "thank you" - with no...

‘Cyclists who kill could face life sentence’

It is (under section 72 of the Highway Act 1835). The Highway Code also states that you should not cycle on a pavement. There is no age exemption, either. The West Yorkshire Police Website, for example, emphatically states that "It is an offence to ride a pedal cycle intentionally on a...

Split ticketing delay repay trick, or fraud?

Slightly different scenario: When I am travelling from Evesham to Fort William, I usually split tickets with one to Birmingham, one (advance) from Birmingham to Glasgow and then a 3rd from Glasgow to Fort William. One reason for this is because I have a Scotrail over 50 railcard giving a...

    Anyone live beside the railway.

The view from my "holiday cottage" :D * (pic shows Jacobite steam train passing alongside Loch Eilt) * It's actually an open bothy, so anyone can stay there, but it's not heavily used, and I've been responsible for looking after it for the past 30 years :) And my house in Evesham backs on...

Trivia: What are the quirkiest railway stations in Britain?

In a similar vein, at Morton-in-Marsh the signage is all in English and Japanese.

If you were able to change the rail network in Worcestershire in any way, what would you change?

That's what I would do. Have all trains stop at Parkway.

    Is this bus actually free?

I have always assumed that if you use a RRB then you must have a valid ticket for the train it's replacing - albeit can't ever recall having been asked to show one, and I've never used a RRB for just a short trip, where the bus constitutes the whole of my journey. Whether boarding without...

Discussion About What Should Happen if Unable to Show a Ticket Due to Phone Running Out of Charge

If my phone charge was getting low, I would simply switch it off. Ensuring you have enough charge on your phone to show a ticket is no different to ensuring you remembering to keep your ticket secure in your wallet and not throwing it in the bin with other litter from your pocket. However, I...

    “And I was like?”

Can't say I've noticed the phrase myself, but I don't watch TV and most of the public I engage in conversation with tend to be middle aged or older (I'm assuming its usage is more common amongst younger people?)

    Possible hurricane next week

It's actually the remnant of Hurricane Kirk (expected to be Cat 4 in mid Atlantic) that is currently predicted to pass close to southern England as a very deep depression towards the end of next week. Most models currently have it tracking over northern France, but it could track further north...

    Paddington to Malvern?

Yes, boarding at Malvern you should be fine - probably be the only 1st class passenger on it from there!

    Paddington to Malvern?

There have been some cancellations on Sundays just recently. As per above, the service tends to be busy between Paddington and Oxford (and vice versa) but quieter for the Cotswold line itself. Obviously more space likely in the 9 car trains than those with just 5 coaches.

Wrong operator after cancelled train - penalty fare rights

I hope so! And also, I suspect that, even despite many years of privatisation and seperate TOCs, many passengers - especially those who only occasionally use them for long distance travel - see the railway as being all one and dont even appreciate that there are seperate TOCs. They are simply...

Wrong operator after cancelled train - penalty fare rights

The simple answer is surely to change the rules so that, if you have an advance or TOC specific ticket for a train which is cancelled you may then travel on any other service to the same destination?

A bit of heavy metal for you: Saxon - Princess of the Night She used to be an iron horse Twenty years ago Used to bring the mail to me Through the ice and snow I've sat alone and watched her Steaming through the night Ninety tons of thunder Lighting up the sky She was a princess of the night...
