Yes I knew right away there was disruption on the Wirral Line this morning when a large number of people boarded my usual Liverpool-bound bus opposite Birkenhead Central station at around 07:20.
Also I could see numerous people waiting right outside the station (where the rail replacement...
Only recent photographs I'm afraid and nothing from the era when trains were running on it. To me, the tracks seemed to indicate a disused line.
I walked along the Barton Dock Road on 29th August 2013, and took a few snaps. Not sure if anyone would be interested in these - but here goes :D :-
Thanks for the reply. I did a nice walk around Carr Mill Dam and through Haresfinch last summer. I'll have to go back later this year and check it out again. :D
Very true. I wonder how things are going at Thatto Heath? I haven't been up that way for a few months.
I only mention it because years ago, I used to go there many weekends (many of my family are from Thatto Heath/St Helens area).
Fond memories of the station, can't wait to go back after...
Yes, still loads to do. I'm not at all qualified to estimate the amount of time needed to complete this job (as I work in IT, not the railways) - but I personally wouldn't be surprised if it overruns a bit, given the obvious scale and complexity of the task in hand.
I suppose the ongoing...
Yes indeed, it is good to see things happening on this stretch. I also saw some sort of small yellow maintenance vehicle trundling along the tracks in the distance, but it had gone out of sight towards Wavertree tech park station by the time I got my camera out.
When it's all completed, I'll...
Thanks for the reply. Indeed, from a Wirral perspective, even extension of electrification from Bidston to Shotton with some Ellesmere Port-like half-hourly service and perhaps a new Park and Ride at J3 of the M53 (Woodchurch Interchange) would be a very welcome start. These things would...
I've worked full time in Liverpool for the last 18 years. My options are limited to public transport as I don't drive. I only live three stops from the tunnel on the Birkenhead side, so it's only a a relatively short journey, nevertheless the time taken getting into Liverpool can vary depending...
Yes it certainly is a grand building, and back around ten years ago I used to go past it many evenings on my way home from work on the old 441 (Liverpool-Woodchurch) bus which used to go down Titherbarn Street (and then get stuck at the lights at Great Crosshall Street/Byrom Street for ages!)...
Thank you very much Taunton for the very interesting and detailed post. I'm always fascinated to hear the history about the Bidston-Wrexham line. I'm 40 now and my very earliest memories of travelling on the railways are in the late '70s but I was only 4-5 years old at the time.
Also...
I'm happy to say that at least the grand frontage of Liverpool Exchange railway station on Tithebarn Street has survived, although now it's in use as an office building "Mercury Court". Photo taken on 6th April 2013:-
To Requeststop, Thank you very much for the encouraging reply. Glad you enjoyed the write up so far! Yes, I remember now I went to Parkgate back in 2002, on one of those rare days (once or twice a year I think) when the tide was in. Back then, I was unaware that the tide ever came in at Parkgate...
Hello again all,
Today, I finally got around to doing the third and final of my intended series of three Wirral daytrips. As I mentioned in the first post in this thread (back in June!), daytrip three would cover that part of the geographical Wirral Peninsula which is in the "Cheshire West and...
I was in Ellesmere Port on Saturday afternoon just gone. After taking a few photos of the Boat Museum and the Manchester Ship Canal etc, I had a little bit of time to kill and as I was on Oil Sites Road anyway, I though I'd walk down the road a bit to see if it's possible to get to Stanlow &...
Just out of curiosity, do you happen to know why they do that?
The reason I ask is because the other week, I specifically asked for a return to Wrexham Central, but was issued with a return to Wrexham General.
Thanks for the reply!
Yes, I understand that the Bromborough site is currently the leading candidate for location of the battle (well at least according to Wikipedia anyway :D )
Although without any completely conclusive evidence it still remains an open question.
I also note on Wikipedia...
Daytrip 2, Part 3 - Heswall's two stations then onwards to Hooton
Onwards I walked along the former trackbed. Since Caldy, the alignment has been in a more south-easterly direction than south.
I now pass the traditional parish boundary from Thurstaston in to Heswall:-
This boundary no longer...
