    Fare dodging at Wigan Wallgate

Or you can exit at the Salford end of the platforms via the footbridge to the front of the MEN, I use this occasionally if I'm headed down Deansgate/Chapel Street as it saves me a bit of time.

Electrification after chat moss routes. etc.

Extending from Guide Bridge to Stalybridge. This would allow a Piccadilly stopper to run from the bay platform and with considered connecting times in relation to the Hadfield services would provide many stations an alternative connection to TPE services rather than travelling all the way...

    Manchester's Disused Lines

Are you looking for lines that still have the rails on them, if not I'd heartily reccomend the Rose Hill Marple - Macclesfield (renamed Middlewood Way) route which is now a dedicated path. It's a lovely walk, there's still remains of old platform at Higher Poynton and you get to walk over the...

Best Food & Drink at Stations or very Near By

Manchester Piccadilly - Would recommend The Bulls Head, just across the road from the Fairfield Street entrance as quality alternative to the on-station bars. Greenfield The Railway Inn - a favourite with those doing the train/pub crawl. Excellent range of ciders and real ales.

    Holding trains

I have certainly heard announcements on TPE services when this has happened, saying that they should alert the conductor if they need to use the toilet at a station.

    Virgin Saturday Day Travelcard

I used on in May last year for Cup final day and a bit of sightseeing beforehand and used it for both underground and overground with no problems with the staff. I did not chance it with the barrier, however as the travelcard and return portion of the virgin service to Manchester were on the...

    Refreshment Trolleys

The only Northern sighting I have had is one the Leeds - Carlisle service which I believe is provided by the S&C Partnership, but I may be wrong.

London Midland Great Escape is back!

Delighted with this, heading to London from Manchester on 19th February and is it's FA Cup weekend all the advance fares with Virgin are gone. So I've treated myself to a £20 voucher and it will cost me just £8.40 return from Stockport to Crewe to connect with the LM service

    Remember Your Railcard!

At weekends I tend to buy an all-day bus ticket and keep in my season ticket wallet for safe-keeping, last week I forgot to take it out on Monday morning but still safely passed the inspectors - I won't name the station.

Manchester Airport, running to the train

I cannot remember the terminal (it was Flymaybe from Glasgow), but I have once managed to only just make a train that was departing 25mins after the cabin doors opened and I'm no slouch. Would definitely not risk it on an advance unless allowing an hour between arrival and train departure to be...

    Train Etiquette

Likewise, I'm not special enough to warrant two seats to myself, but if get there first I reserve the right to pick which of the two I would prefer to sit in.

    Train Etiquette

I do this if travelling just one stop, saves someone sitting next to me and unpacking snacks and drinks onto their tray only to have to shift all again to let me out 15 minutes later.

    West Yorkshire Day Rover

I'd agree with that - the Hebden Bridge - Haworth route is great and you could get the train back to Keighley on the Hope Valley railway for a reasonably modest additional fare.

    'Hidden' stations

Hyde North is pretty well hidden as the road that serves it is old cobbled one and the tunnel under the line does not allow space for two cars to pass each other, so the road is not used that much. The other one that springs to mind is Middlewood, which is in the middle of a wood and can only...

    Walks between stations

This a real hobby of mine. So far I have done: Stalybridge -Huddersfield Stalybridge - Marsden Marsden - Hebden Bridge Liverpool - Maghull Maghull - Burscough Burscough - Adlington (Lancs) Adlington (Lancs) - Blackburn Blackburn - Colne Colne - Skipton Skipton - Shipley Shipley - Leeds Rose...

I hope we will be seeing Alliance Rail on this list in the future.

    Manchester - Carlisle via Leeds

Wouldn't I be missing out on half the line that way? The Bradford option looks favourite, plus I do the TPE route so often, Calder Valley will be a nice change.

    Manchester - Carlisle via Leeds

I was looking at Northern's Duo page but there was no mention of Settle-Carlisle being covered, but if it is that is great. Good suggestion with regards to going via Bradford too, not thought of that option.

    Manchester - Carlisle via Leeds

Myself and a friend (no railcards etc..) are planning to take a trip up the Settle-Carlisle line on 11th September. Looking to head out earlyish, non-stop to Carlisle then breaking the journey on the way back down to do some walking. Any suggestions on the cheapest way to do this? Thanks.
