its a requirement of any penalty fare scheme in operation: http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/rail/legislation/pf/penaltyfarespolicya?page=5 Note also, the requirement: "passengers must be given a sufficient opportunity to buy a ticket or permit to travel before they get on a penalty fares train" - so...

Excess Fares Query - Appeal againt Penalty Charge at St Panc

Once again, we see a good customer of the railway be caught out by the Penalty Fare rules even though they made no attempt to avoid paying the correct fare. Time to end this nonsense. Clearly, the penalty fare was morally wrong since the OP made a reasonable attempt to obtain the correct...

Penalty Fare advice - please help!

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23731140-fare-dodgers.do Politely refuse to pay the penalty and simply pay the full single fare. On the train or at the station, you have the absolute right to make only "a minimum payment that is equal to the full single fare which [you]...

Wigan to Redhill via Euston and the evening off-peak blackout

how can they possibly do that? does the ticket issuing staff question your intentions? anyway, redhill or the london station he changes at would probably do it and not figure it out why

Penalty Fare advice - please help!

the PF is relying on this: "Then you must, as soon as is reasonably practicable, buy an appropriate ticket to complete your journey." There are 2 schools of thought on this: (a) she did not comply with the above statement, issue a PF (b) since the "appropriate ticket" was a zero excess, she...

Penalty Fare advice - please help!

I would agree with you had the OP been able to buy the ticket she required, however the time she purchased the ticket, the office was closed and the TVM could not issue that ticket. I don't think anyone seriously believes that the OP would not have bought the correct ticket had the booking...

Penalty Fare advice - please help!

The TOC would never risk court action over an unpaid penalty fare due to a zero excess. The press would humiliate them. The OP did know know her PF rights, and the TOC picked up an easy 20 quid. That's the result they're going for, taking advantage of honest people's ignorance. Hopefully the...

Fuel Cost For A Station Call?

my understanding was that it included wear & tear on a 30 year old trainset as well as the fuel cost of accelerating to speed from a stop. It might include the charge, I don't remember.

    Penalty Fare

I thought the original problem was the OSI's had caused a higher fare to be chosen than if the fare had been calculated in the way the OP expected. I didn't catch that there was a technical issue with the system and that was not the case. Sorry for the confusion.

Penalty Fare advice - please help!

it'd be even better if she could still get the excess ticket (ie. the return period hasn't expired) so she can hold up the one she should have gotten in the picture, along with the penalty fare notice. Actually it probably isn't a bad idea to get the excess as part of the appeal process.....

Penalty Fare advice - please help!

it won't be successful since the ticket office at BHI was open when she began her journey to Selly Oak. The only way she'll get her 20 quid back is to get the local newspaper on the case, "charged 20 quid because I did not buy a ticket with a face value of 0" type story...
