Whilst pacers are withdrawn here, in Slovakia they are rebuilding their railbuses: https://www.railwaygazette.com/traction-and-rolling-stock/zos-zvolen-produces-demonstrator-dmu/38840.article

    Northern Pacer Withdrawals - Info?

Someone has posted this on the RM web forum:- "Following a rumour that Saturday 15th February would be the "last day", I have had the following from a manager within Northern: 142's will be running until "at least" the 6th March in the North West, there will still be 2 diagrams that will...

How have the UK's least-liked trains given such reliable service?

Some of the parts replaced on Pacers were down to obsolescence. The SCG gearboxes were certainly a loss and were quickly replaced. (All 142s-144s had Voith gearboxes by march 1991). The direct acting brake modification was also completed in 1991. The Leyland TL11 engine went out of production in...

Thanks for this. Are the Saturday diagrams for 142s only on Rochdale to Blackburn/Clitheroe now?

142043 was again on the 09:35am Kirkby to Manchester Victoria service today with a 150.

    Northern Pacer Withdrawals - Info?

It seems strange to repair 142041 if the 142s are indeed only staying in service till mid February, especially as there are warm stored units at Heaton, that could be put back into service.

    Northern Class 195: Construction/Introduction Updates

Might be prudent to see what Parry People Movers could offer.

    Northern Class 142 sightings

Someone else posted that they had read that it was after the 14 February. I am going to travel on them as much as I can in the next couple of weeks. I am then going to weigh up my options. I find a lot of the replacement rolling stock uncomfortable, with large platform gaps and difficulty...

    Northern Class 142 sightings

It does seem to be that on a Saturday, the Rochdale to Blackburn/Clitheroe services are the best place to find 142s. Four were on there last Saturday. The 18:41 Man Vic to Clitheroe regularly has one on it on a Saturday.

    Northern Class 142 sightings

The 9:35 Kirkby to Manchester Vic does not have a 142 on it on Saturdays. Until two weeks ago the Saturday 10:35 Kirkby to Manchester Vic had a 142/150 combi on it, but the last two Saturdays it has just been a 150/1.

    Northern Class 142 sightings

Sorry no. I don't usually take photos of trains. I mainly take ones of vintage buses at rallies. I did however snap a 142 at Carnforth station last May. I will look for it. I think that it was 142090.

    Northern Class 142 sightings

Quite a different beast back then with the Leyland TL11 engines and SCG gearboxes. My first trip on one was around Christmas 1986 from Wigan NW to Preston. I always liked some Pacer thrash on he WCML!

    Northern Pacer Withdrawals - Info?

An acquaintance of mine who has a lot of contacts, says that he has been told that there is no booked work for the remaining NH 142s after 14th February. We will have to wait and see what happens.

    Northern Capacity

Going back to the mid 80s in the days of first generation DMUs, the trains operating on the Southport line were at least 3 carriages long and 6 carriages were common. We have now stepped backwards with only two carriages on most services. I would have expected that the electrification of the 8...

    Northern Pacer Withdrawals - Info?

142050 was built with Voith transmission. There was a picture of it's new underframe in a railway magazine at the time. I am not sure which magazine it was.

Memories of the introduction of Pacer units

Actually, Leyland Nationals were very long lived in some fleets. True that the 510 'headless wonder' engine was the achilles heel of the MK1, but some operators overcame this by fitting them with Gardner, DAF or Volvo engines or later the Cummins B series with an Allison gearbox. J Fishwick &...

    Northern Pacer Withdrawals - Info?

I was in West Yorkshire last Tuesday. The Bradford - Halifax - Brighouse - Huddersfield service was in the hands of single 153s. Is this the norm now?
