How have the UK's least-liked trains given such reliable service?

A local coach company that still operated a number of elderly Leyland Tiger coaches in the mid 2000s said that the TL11s in them were still very reliable. There was a 680/TL11 cross known as the rationalised 680 or the 1595. There was also the 4041 or L11 which appears to be a non turbocharged...

How have the UK's least-liked trains given such reliable service?

Before the 150/1s my least liked trains were Class 104s, Class 304s and 504s with their dingy lighting and dark wooden stained interiors. The ride quality on all of them was bad. The 104s blew diesel fumes into the interiors and the seat cushions on these 304s and 504s acted as part of the...

    Northern Class 142 sightings

Looking at the NH504 diagram, it leaves Manchester Vic for Kirkby at 0736. It arrives at Kirkby at 0849. Does this then stand at Kirkby for 46 minutes before leaving as the 0935 back to Manchester Victoria?

142046 was on the back of 142005 in the video. 142046 was put in warm storage at the time at Heaton, but kept reappearing back in service until it was sent for scrap.

    Northern Class 142 sightings

Has 142004 still got a bad wheel flat? 142004 is another unit that I can remember travelling on in 1990 to Southport.

A 142 with a 150/1 leading is on the 09:35 Kirkby to Manchester Vic. Is that the same diagram as the 11:13 Manchester Vic to Kirkby?

Tyne And Wear Metro Cars Possible Further Uses

I don't know whether it has been suggested before, but how feasible would it be to convert these units to DEMUs as carried out to make Class 230s from London Underground D78 stock and Class 769s from 319s? I have never been on the Tyne and wear Metro, but have watched videos of them on YT. They...

    Northern Class 195: Construction/Introduction Updates

The door issues with he 195s had me thinking about the Cravens ADG railcars that were in service in Perth, Australia between 1954 and 1992. They regularly ran with the doors open and apparently no one ever fell from them. How times change, it would be a definite "NO NO" today! This video at 6:55...

    Northern Pacer Withdrawals - Info?

Thanks for this information Llama. Just a couple of questions:- are these Mon to Friday workings only? Will the 0636 Kirkby to Manchester Vic diagram (with the 142 on it) come back round three hours later and do the 0936 Kirkby to Manchester Vic as it does now?

    Northern Class 142 sightings

From what I've read above, 142043 has now been laid up at NH. I rode on that twice last week on the 09:35 Kirkby to Manchester Victoria. I have two recollections of riding on this unit in 1990. One was from Preston to Wigan NW and the other was from Blackburn to Bolton around June of that year...

    Northern Class 142 sightings

I was going to venture out on Saturday to get some last 142 rides, but it is looking like there is going to be a lot of disruption again as another storm is on it's way.

    Northern Class 142 sightings

I was there as well. The unit was 142047, I didn't get the number of the 158. According to another poster, there were 3 142s on the Rochdale to Blackburn/Clitheroe route last Saturday. I returned to Bolton on the same train which was the 16:19 departure from Blackburn. According to another...

BBC news story about new train performance

The 195s did undergo a lot of testing before entering service which revealed the coupler problem. They were a few months late entering service.

The ride quality when sat over a bogie on a Class 195 reminds me of the First Generation DMUs.

It still begs the question why are most busy Southport services only formed of two carriages? Hopefully things will get better once the 769s are in service.
