    Career change, IT to Railway

If you’re based in Brum, I would apply to Chiltern for the train manager position they’re advertising. Good experience doing safety critical work and scope to progress to driving with Chiltern or other TOCs. It’s right to say that you don’t need to do anything else to become a driver, but being...

    Railway and Dating Life

It’s certainly possible. My good lady and I both work shifts and she lives 65 miles away but we still spend 75% of our time together. You get out what you put in really.

Virgin Trains West Coast Apprentice Train Driver

I had testing with a different TOC and OPC told me I couldn’t progress as I needed enhanced level pass marks, and then I was told that I should apply for one job at a time. So I’m out.

    Driver Vacancy - Scotrail, Stranraer

Have many people completed the second round of testing? The Visual Search Exercise is a bit of a challenge.

racism, sexism, disability discrimination in Network Rail recruitment

I don’t have any personal experience of this but which of those protected characteristics do you feel have been held against you, if you don’t mind me asking? At New Street the staff seem to be fairly diverse but I’m interested to hear what your particular experience is.

    Station Grade A

Your job as a dispatcher is the safety of passengers on the station, ensuring boarding and alighting is done safely and minimising risk during dispatch which is the area of greatest risk. Make sure you research the company and have some knowledge about routes and stations.

    Station Grade A

Right, so you’ll be dispatching then? From my experience (albeit with a different company) you’ll have some competency based questions so it’s good to prepare examples about customer service, safety, emergencies and dealing with an awkward customer. Would also be beneficial to mention PTI, which...

SCATT test with West Midlands Trains

Well, London Midland used the Group Bourdon, which is the dot test, so I imagine that’s what they’ll be using still.

    Conductor role

Not a problem. Their number is ‭01904 568543‬. That’s the HR contact centre in York. They can be quite slow and do need chasing up sometimes so best of luck to you.

    Conductor role

Northern HR are fairly bad but saying that, so are all HR departments. If you like I can give you the phone number for their HR department in York and you can make enquiries that way. I speak from personal experience when I say the only way to get anything done is pestering them.

Old school stations from a Virgin Conductor

I’ve heard some old hands refer to “Churchill and Blakedown” as opposed to just Blakedown. At the station, the converted former sognalbox still says Churchill and Blakedown.

    London Midland Platform Assistant/Dispatch

I would be truly amazed if any new starters are current Railway employees. And I know for a fact internals don’t want these jobs. After all, Dispatch is the first rung on the ladder. Best of luck to those who were unsuccessful and congratulations to those who were successful.
