Yes they had the whole /5 subclass. Ordered/purchased/made for Southern (hence the Southern interiors) but subleased to TL and then off to SE. They’ve never turned a wheel in service for Southern.
Still maintained at Selhurst, so you’ll often see them on the blocks at the depot and passing...
Southern used 350s for a while. While dual voltage 377/2’s went to TL awaiting the 387’s, LM loaned a few to SN. Didn’t really appreciate what that was all about at the time. Would have enjoyed seeing that.
Yes, pretty standard. I frequently use the 0711 Ore - London Victoria and 1901 Clapham Junction - Ore and since the 387/1’s have arrived, both turns are now booked for 387s and can be a mix of Southern and GatEx stock. Shame, the 377’s are much comfier for a kip on the way to work.
I agree that I’d take any form of Electrostar over a 455.
I don’t think I’d agree 2 x 377 is ‘entirely unsuitable’. I wouldn’t disagree that other stock is more suitable, the large dwell/vestibule areas of 376’s and 700/707’s are better than a 377, but SN use their 377’s on all sorts of metro...
That was the case however it’s changed now. The white 387’s are SN stock but I have seen them on a GatEx diagram. I understand they aren’t meant to be on them but if it saves a short form.
Oh I agree that would have been sensible. I just keep reading all these plans that seem to be ‘send 30 377’s over to SE and a couple of spare other units lying around and that’ll be enough to get rid of the Networkers’. And it won’t be. There are a lot of Networkers to replace haha
Surely that would leave everything in the same situation? Just with SN having a new type of stock to train staff and fitters on? Yes, I know they’re Electrostar so lots of similar parts and cab layout etc, but giving the 376’s to Southern to receive the same amount of 377’s back is surely just...
It does and I enjoy it purely as an enthusiast. But I do feel for the confused passengers when a formation of one Gatwick Express branded 387 and one Southern branded 387 pull up at Haywards Heath working a Gatwick Express service to London, while the same half and half formation appears on the...
Yeah I’m with you on this. As a regular user I know how it works, but it’s not helpful for Joe Public.
Once it leaves Wimbledon heading south towards Sutton, it should flick over to having its destination as Mitcham Junction and then leaving West Sutton it should go to St. Albans. On the other...
Whilst it isn’t always accurate for the finer details, Wiki will tell you which TOC’s serve a station.
I have a rail atlas which has all the stations listed but it also has tunnels, junctions and other staff listed in the same index so you’d need to look closely for which names are stations etc.
Can confirm 377316 and 377318 both have at least one original logo on them having seen both of them today at Selhurst. Both currently on Selhurst duties if you’re intending to spot them.
I always found it weird seeing ‘Brighton & Brighton’ or ‘Ramsgate & Ramsgate’. One of those instances where it makes sense to have the train as ‘Brighton & Preston Park’. I think SE did it with ‘Ramsgate & Sandwich’ but it’s not my patch so I’m not sure if it was for that service.
There are a couple of original logos still floating about. A /6 series definitely has one and I think a couple of /1, /2 or /4. It’s sometimes just one coach per train, but a couple of original ones are still knocking about.
Pretty certain a 171 has one too.
There used to be Southern services that ran from Victoria to Haywards Heath, then split to Brighton, one fast, one all stations. Southeastern definitely had some that were ‘Ramsgate & Ramsgate’ splitting at Ashford and running one via Dover and one via Canterbury West. I have no idea if they ran...
To my knowledge (which is pretty good with Southern operations), the only three way splitters were Victoria to Redhill, which then split into Reigate/Tonbridge/Horsham. The only other one that is sort of a three way split, was the Victoria to Littlehampton and Ore, which split at Haywards Heath...
Every effort will be made to get a level of service run. So if it’s 4 cars vice 8, that’ll still run. Unless, using Purley as an example, it’s the front unit that arrives off the Caterham branch that promptly fails and then blocks the healthy Tattenham one from moving, then you’re sort of...
Well partly because this is a railway forum and people here love trains and discussing what they could do with their favourite routes and stock
But also because the railway used to offer less trains but to a wider spread of destinations, now the tendency seems to be more trains but to less...
Wouldn’t work for reasons stated above. Clearing pax out the train at a core station to terminate would take too long. You could run it down to somewhere like Elephant and Castle but I don’t think there’s room to turn a full LNER service there and 80x stock probably isn’t cleared. A big old faff...
