Virgin Trains East Coast launch day

Talking of a pedantic question, here's one that's always bugged me (aimed at everyone, not you in particular...) On that picture, the ends of the carriages have the same curved cut out segment on the bottom edge that pretty much all trains seem to... the MK3 and MK4 carriages have them, South...

Greater Anglia Good and Bad Discussion

Had, overall, extremely pleasant experiences on AGA recently. Very good punctuality; everyone kept informed of the reasons for the one instance of late running; the new refurbished Mk3s are really genuinely nice to travel in... the one connection I was worried about missing due to their abysmal...

Reservations - do you HAVE to sit in a reserved seat?

Thanks for your replies, I will bear this in mind in future next time some idiot decides that the music on your phone is ideal company for a train full of passengers! Another question, related... going from SOU to NRW on an AP GRTANG&CONCTS Advance ticket, I have two reservation tickets, one...

Reservations - do you HAVE to sit in a reserved seat?

A question that came up when me and my partner were travelling this weekend... My partner had an Advance single with a seat reservation, I had an off-peak return, and she was reserved somewhere in coach C (because AGA only ever seem to reserve Advance tickets in coach C). We moved into the next...

    Platform ticket at Waterloo?

Rather amusing to see actual issued platform tickets. At Southampton Central they seem to keep the same one in the little kiosk next to the gateline and hand it out to whoever asks for one (typically me...)

Why do you use the train?

Oh, different meaning of "why do you use the train"... For leisure only - I am lucky enough to not have a commute as such, so my train journeys are for visiting other people. It's comfortable, it's convenient, it's somewhat cheap.

Why do you use the train?

Because National Express is less comfortable, less punctual and more expensive for the journeys I make regularly (SOU-NRW).

Why I think we should leave the EU

That's if there even was a rule which, as discussed, there wasn't. It's just more idiocy from the Daily Mail.

Why I think we should leave the EU

Well, used to be, before people started electing the Ukip clowns as MEPs so we had no representation and our PM piddled our influence away by trying to look hard.

Why I think we should leave the EU

These two comments go well together for this reason: we do have democratic control over the EU, through electing MEPs. However, too many people don't care enough to make an informed choice, or want to "protest" by voting in the EU elections for a certain party with a purple and yellow colour who...

Why I think we should leave the EU

I came to this thread expecting to find some ill-informed anti-EU drivel based on made-up nonsense, and now I can leave it satisfied.

YouGov poll suggests most want British Rail back.

I have to agree with this. The private sector is profit-seeking, that much is obvious, but employers are not entirely devoid of morals as they are, after all, still run by humans who possess some level of decency (in most cases). However, that still doesn't change that unions are necessary as...

YouGov poll suggests most want British Rail back.

Let me ask you a question in return; why does their being happy with their lot mean that unions have to go away or be defanged for everyone, rather than just them not electing to be in one? Unions are (and should be) there to assist those who aren't on good salaries and who get no respect from...

YouGov poll suggests most want British Rail back.

I would be lying if I said a lot of it wasn't due to sour grapes. And rather than unionising themselves, or fighting for the same protections, they want to pull everyone down to their level.

YouGov poll suggests most want British Rail back.

The bit where he oddly enough only singled out Labour leaders (some not even PMs) as "tyrants" is pretty dodgy, and that's just a start. Blair was not wonderful by any stretch, and I say that as a Labour member and supporter (capsule summary: the man's government did a hell of a lot of good...

    GEML Closure 31/01 to 22/03

That is a permitted route and is issued for Advance tickets from London to Norwich and the reverse. I wouldn't recommend it usually because of the very slim six minute connection time at Cambridge, although obviously there aren't many other options at this point...:lol::lol::lol:

Ideas for alternative ways of running the railways

The same franchised system we have now, but with significantly more conditions on the franchised operators, much like London Overground and Scotrail, and with various abolitions: No individual branding; the British Rail branding to return or National Rail branding to be used with the double...

Rather large out of court settlement

If you want to pinpoint specific individuals who have not already left the industry and who are actively responsible for "bringing the country to its knees" through their own deliberate actions which were actually fraudulent or in some other way contrary to regulations that were in place at the...

    50 years of BR's Double-Arrow logo

If the logo isn't needed and is now not recognisable then I'd question why it is still everywhere given that the organisation it is the logo for was dissolved 20 years ago and the TOCs would probably much rather put their own brands in its place. The real answer is that the double arrows...

Abellio Greater Anglia announce series of improvements

Their vendetta is a bit scary, and I actually find myself defending Abellio on there sometimes. Recently they were slagging them off for a slow freight train causing delays (not Abellio's fault) and also for someone having to buy another ticket because they forgot their season ticket (which is...
